SOURCE: 18v cordless string trimmer will not stop feeding line

Some of the trimmers recommend a certain size line, if you have one of these that let line out as needed, the speed at which the trimmer cuts will let out line as needed. If you have too small of line the drag for the friction let-out you will spoll all the line out. Make sure the line is the right size, They come in alot of sizes, anywhere from .060" to .125" line thickness so make sure you have the right size line!

SOURCE: Line gets tangled in gear under feed spool

Problem solved. We noticed something was broken off a small part inside the spool holder. My husband took it to the local hardware store, and one of the employees gave him the part from a trimmer that had been returned.

Rope tangled around shaft, came off of the spool.

Sound like that is your clutch and it comes off by turning it in the direction of the arrow it takes a special tool if you are lucky some times you can be careful and tap it that direction with an punch and a hammer

Pull start jammed

Hi hwdunk, the best way to find the problem you are having is to remove the pull start from the trimmer. You will have to unhook the throttle cable from the carburetor, It can usually be unhooked without loosening the carb screws, but if you can't unhook the cable loosen the carb screws to unhook. As you remove the assembly you will have to unhook the 2 wires that come from the on and off switch, they just pull off. Use long nose pliers, it is much easier. Now you will see what the problem is. The rope is probably tangled up or has come off the rope pulley. I hope this helps you a bit. All the best and good luck.

Rope will not retract.

I am assuming you tried to pull start and the rope is stuck out. Just try pulling the rope while it is out, but stand on the hedge trimmer. Sometimes when this happens to me, I just pull the rope a little extra and then hang onto it when it goes back in. Alot of times, I think the rope gets caught on the outside of the retraction pulley causing a tangle.

You should be able to take the housing loose with about 4-6 torx head bolts/screws and get in there and untangle the rope. May not even have to take the housing off, just loosen it. Good Luck!

Rope on my trimmer will not come out its stuck

You may have to take the thing to bits and Re-wind the line properly. They do tangle up, and so would you spinning at that speed.

Cannot get my trimmer started.

Tom, it sounds like part of the rope has jumped off of the spool. There should be a small piece of plastic with a screw holding the spool in place. It may have worked itself loose.

Pull rope is striped

remove the starter housing, usually only 3 or 4 bolts or screws. on the inside should be a large white or black wheel, hold the outer case with one hand and rotate the wheel counter-clockwise with the other as many times as can without force. on the inside of the wheel should be a small hole, rotate the wheel to line it up with rope guide hole on the outer case/housing. use a nail or small screwdriver to help hold in place. feed the start rope through the 2 holes and tie a knot at the end, single or double depending on the size of the hole. if the end of the rope is frayed, use lighter to melt and twist to a point to make it easier to handle. when reassembling you may need to jiggle the handle for realignment. it works on an inner spring coil tensioner system, so if the cable has no tension when rotated or doesn't recoil back, the starter assembly will need to be replaced.

Replacing the rope

If you are looking at the spool itself, turn it counterclock wise, without wineing string.
