Question about GE GSS25LGM Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

My refrigarator is not getting cold on the fresh food side. The freezer works fine so the compressor is good. Is there a fan for the FF side and if so where is it? There is a trap door at the top which is open. It seems there shoulod be a fan on the FF side to either blow cold air or create a suction to draw the cold air from the freezer side. I changed the thermostat but that didn't fix it. Can you help please? Thanks, Mike

There is only one fan. over the evaporator in freezer section. check to see if fan is operating. check for frost on rear panel of freezer section. if so unit is not going into defrost.

if there is frost on rear panel you need to check 3 different parts. frost will appear if either the units defrost timer is bad which in your case your ge should have a control board which controls the defrost cycle. you have to replace board. if not the board it could be the heater itself. you can ohm out the heater. if its getting resistance then your good. if not thats your problem. the 3rd part is the defrost bimetal which works when the unit goes into defrost the bimetal thermo makes contact which in return sends voltage to the heater. you can ohm this out as well. the bimetal is about a quarter size thermo with two wire leads. it is clipped onto the evaporator itself. to access the evaporator you have to remove rear panel in frzr section. should be held on with either phillps screws or quarter inch screws. check evap fan for good air flow as well.

  • kenrick driscoll Jun 21, 2009

the reason your not cooling properly in the refrigerator section is the unit uses the evap fan to blow cold air off of the evaporator into the fresh food side. this can not work if there is frost on evap. frost restricts air flow

Freezer working fine, fridge not at all

Brand name and model would help but here is a guess. Most frost free refrigerators have the main cooling unit in the freezer area side. To get the fresh food side cold, there is a small fan in the freezer side that blows cold air to the fresh food side through a duct work or trap door. If that fan stops or fails for and reason, the first place you will notice the temp rise is in the fresh food section. See if you can hear the freezer fan running. You may need to push in the door switch for the freezer light to hear the fan because they sometimes run the fan wiring through the door switch. It may stop when door is opened.

My refrigerator is not cooling on the refrigerator side

There are so many things that can make your fresh food side not cool. Usually, it is a frosted up evaporator, which is blocking the air flow of cold from coming from the freezer to the fresh food section. This can be caused by a bad defrost timer, a bad defrost thermostat, a bad defrost heater, or a bad control board. It could be a week compressor that is only strong enough to cool the freezer, the evaporator fan may be bad, which blows the cold air from the freezer to the fresh food section, the damper control going from the freezer to the fresh food section, can be stuck in the closed position, or in rare cases, the light in the fresh food section can be staying on, or even the condenser fan that is responsible for keeping the compressor and condenser from getting to hot, may be bad. This is usually behind the bottom of the fridge. You might also have a dirty condenser, which is the coil that is usually underneath the fridge. So you are most likely going to have to call for service.

The freezer stopped working but the frige seem fine. no ice build up on the defrost timer.

No model # given to reference the symtoms. I would surly worry if you had ice buildup on the defrost timer. Some are in the fresh food side and some are outside the compartments. Extreamly rare to have one in the freezer.
Also if this is a standard SxS or top mount system...everything that happens in the fresh food section, happens because of the freezer. Air moves from the ff side to the freezer. The air is cooled down and recirulates back through the freezer and to the ff side. Issue could be ...evaporator fan bad or low RPM, freezer door switch, cold control not cycling on / back on. Compressor intermittantly cycling / bad start device / weak compressor, condenser fan slow or not cycling...should be on anytime compressor is running. Some of these items can be visually checked, some require advanced knowledge and a multimeter for test. Be careful of live voltage and sharp edges.

Working fridge, warm freezer.

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment.

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

In your case, the door must be stuck all the way open, allowing all the cold air to be diverted into the fresh food compartment. The compressor cycle is controlled by the thermostat in the fresh food compartment and thus 'short cycles' because the fresh food compartment acheives normal temperature while the freezer is relativel warm.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck in the extreme open position, for example), the fresh food compartment will get VERY cold while the freezer will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is diverting all the cold air from the freezer into the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel/door/flap itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require the help of a service technician

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

The freezer section of my fridge freezer side by side has broken down and will not freeze. The fridge side seems fine. Is it worth getting repaired? Prior to this I often heard like a clicking/ tapping...

So your refrigerator section is cooling fine ? When the compressor motor is running and you open your freezer, is the fan running ? You might need a simple fan replacement - The most costly repairs to a refrigerator is usually the compressor - as long as your compressor is running and you have cooling, the other most common problems are control board faults, evap fans, defrost timers, all of which can be fixed.

Is your freezer iced up when this happened - turning the refrigerator off and unplugging it, try removing the back panel of your freezer and locate the fan - look for anything obstructing the blades - maybe ice or other......otherwise you may need this serviced.

Is it worth it ? It depends - how much did you nitially pay for this ? How long have you had it ? How much are estimated costs for the repair - if the problem is one thing needing replaced and doesn't cost you a lot of money, yes it is worth it.

Refrigerator does not get cold - GE side by side

In my GE side-by-side refrigerator (model number GSS20IEMDWW), there is a motor-controlled flapper door between the freezer and fresh food side. Cold air from the freezer side cools the fresh food side when that flapper door is open.

It is located at the top of the fresh food side on the dividing wall between the fresh food side and the freezer. If this is blocked with something (large left-over container, soft drink bottles, etc), it _may_ be enough to prevent sufficient cooling of the fresh food side.

Of course, there may be a more serious problem with the flapper door mechanism or the control unit that signals the flapper door to open/close.

The vegetable and deli drawers may have a small opening (manually controlled with a wheel or a slider of some sort) that connects those drawers to the freezer side, thus explaining how those areas are still functioning as expected.

Freezer cold /refrigator warm . we have a side by side unit a couple of years old the freezer seems to work fine but the refrigator is warm .It don,t seem to make any funny noises and the back is clean

When the compressor is running, if the fan by the compressor and the fan inside the freezer are both running, and there is no frost on the back wall of the freezer (if there was frost would indicate a defrost issue) then check the air dampener. It is located at the very top left back side of the fresh food section. If it is not opening up, no air will flow from the freezer compartment (where all the cooling takes place) into the refrigerator section.

First, when the refrigerator is running, open the freezer door and hold in the light switch so the freezer light goes out. You should be able to hear the freezer (evaporator) fan running. If it is running, then you most likely have a problem with the air damper. It is a motorized door in the very upper left side, back corner, of the fresh foods section. The door needs to be open for air to flow into the refrigerator section. If you place your hand near the vent holes at the upper refrigerator section and the freezer fan is running, FF section warm, you should feel cold air entering. If not, the damper door may have broken. It is not real easy to get at to replace, but that is where your problem may be. Be sure to check the freezer fan first, as a non-working icemaker may point in that direction.

Freezer side cold, food side warm not working

3 possible problems.... Machine is possibly not defrosting (if this is it, eventually the freezer will not work as well) The damper between the two sides is possibly not operating, or the fan on the freezer side is possibly not blowing the cold air into the fresh food side.

Freezer works fine but the fridge won't get cold

It sounds like cold air from the freezer isn't making it to the fridge compartment. This can be cause by a several things. The damper that lets air into the fresh food side is stuck in "closed" position, the temp sensor (t-stat) isn't working properly, the evaporator fan (in the freezer comp above the coils) isn't working to blow air up to the fresh food section. In some situations, the defrost cycle for the freezer section isn't working and the coils have frozen into a block of ice and air can't flow over them properly so you get not cold air to the fresh food section but the freezer still stays cold due to the block of ice.
