Not getting a starting arc when foot pedal is depressed on our Idealarc TIG-250/250.

The foot control has a micro switch in it, this one must be worn out. Take it to your nearest werlder shop (like praxair... ) and ask for the microswitch by brand and model of your foot control. It's easy to replace. Probably the welder shop must order it, since it's noy pretty common for this switch to go bad, but it happens, specially on old welders.

While welding aluminum in AC mode (with continuous high frequency), the 50 amp circuit breaker in the house emits a loud buzzing. The machine is electrically grounded to a 8 foot grounding rod. Anny...

The machine is probably taxing the capacity of the power circuit and it's breakers. While the machine may be pulling less than 50 amps average, the high frequency modulation is likely producing peaks over 50 amps. Changing out the 50 amp breakers might help and again may not. The whole circuit should be rated at least 25% over expected current draw. The grounding system is to protect you, not the machine. Good luck!

Tig will work normally on aluminum for a few minutes then will cut out and the only way to start it again is to scratch start it but then it will only work for a little while

this seems to be a duty cycle of the type of welder you may have, the other thing im thinking you need to be in continious cycle mode ,theere should be a switch allowing continious cycle also the main switch should be on ac mode for welding aluminum. the tungsten should be 1% with a green paint on the end .you mention you have to scratch to restart the welder you have might need a high frequency box of its own that also hooks to the welding machine, small amp welders have small duty cycle which means it will shut down if its getting over worked or hot good luck

My tig welder wont arc unless I touch the metal with it

my guess would be the type of welding machine you have.usually there is extra switch which says start control also continious cycle , sometimes smaller machines dont have these switches to allow a wider variety of tweeking the welder ,also its ok if you have to touch the base metal cause thats what starts the contact with the work peice ,keep a arc after touching about 1/4 inch away from work peice ,also a good steady hand rest will make a good welder in any situation this should allow the arc to remaim stable with a comntinious weld arc puddle. happy welding
