Question about Coffee Makers & Espresso Machines

West Bend Lifetime Stove Top Coffee Maker This is a nice heavy stainless steel coffee maker, probably from the 50s or 60s. It has four parts; a carafe that sits on the stove, a piece that fits on that with a perforated well (for the coffee to sit in), a perforated lid for that well, so that the coffee grinds will stay put, and a lid for the top of this section (that will fit the carafe also after the percolation. Here's the part I don't get: usually there is a stem that drives the water from the bottom section to the top section so that it can drip back through the coffee grinds. But there is no stem, nor is there a place for it to go. This design is stemless. When we set it up, the carafe just boils the water. What are we missing????

Not to sound like a knw it all, but we have a pot just like this. You have to boil the water in a seperate kettle and pour it in the pot. This is a drip pot, not a perculator. It will make the best coffe you've ever had.

Once the water comes to a boil in the bottom, pour it in the coffee maker and quickly set the brewer on the bottom pot so the water can drip thru the coffee. Makes the Best coffee!!

How much coffee would it take to make the 55 cups in this coffee maker, and can you use the same coffee as you use for drip machines?

Your model sounds like the West Bend 59055 - Large Coffee Urn, 60 Cup.
The User Manual for your coffer urn can be found here:

http://www.westbend.com/supportdata/L5613B_LargeCapacityUrns-All.pdf

Instruction for making coffee can be found on page 5. For 55 cups is would take 3 1/4 cups of coffee.

Use an electric perc or regular grind coffee; if you grind your own this should be a medium to coarse grind.

Do not use 'drip' or finely ground coffee as this could plug the drain holes in the basket and cause the urn to flood.

The West Bend parts page for a 60-cup urn is here. You didn't give a model, but it's the only 60-cupper they list. You can find the stem there.
