Sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck in the start position. Tap it sharply and see if it still does it when you hook up the battery. You'll probably have to replace the solenoid.

How do I know which post is "in from battery" and "out to starter"? Thanks.

Just guess and hook up the two heavy wires. If it doesn't work, reverse them. You won't hurt anything. BUT---Make sure you have removed one cable from the battery (either one) before making or removing connections to the solenoid.
good luck

Mower will not start, battery cgarged up but onlhy

Check all the wiring connections on the starting system. Start at the battery. Both posts. Then, check where the ground goes to the body of the tractor. Make sure it's not rusty and making a good connection. Check the wire from the battery to the solenoid. If worse comes to worse, you can take a jumper cable and go from the battery + side and jump right to the starter post where an electrical cable connects. This will let the engine turn over, but make sure you have the mower in neutral and brakes set, with blades OFF!
