Question about GE JE1860 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

I have a GE JE 1860. Someone ran the microwave for 15 minutes with nothing in it. Now it doesn't work at all , no power, no lights, nothing. Is there a fuse that may have gotten burned out? Is this fixable?

Thanks> I did check for power at the plug and the outlet is fine. So Guess i just have to figure out a way to get the control panel off to check the fuse.

There is a fuse and cavity thermal fuses as well as one on the magnatron that is supposed to reset itself.. The fuse is behind the control panel and the cavity fuses will require removal of the cabinet. Did you check for power at the plug?

If this is a OTR then there should be screws on the side of the console and maybe at the top. It then slides up and unhooks. Eric

We have a 10 year old GE microwave model JE 1860 and it turns on bit is loud and doesn't 't heat up wondering if it is worth repair or should we just replace it??

Carol, where I live the parts for what could be the possible problem and the labor cost for the repair would probably equal about 2/3 to 3/4 of the cost of a new microwave. Most dealers that I deal with in my area tell me that the average life span of a microwave is 5-7 years. Considering the age and what it might cost it might be better to invest in a new microwave. Hope this helps.

Unless your personally attatched to this oven I would recomend you start shopping for a new one. Take the cover off and look for any fuses inside the front door area or on the control board, If they are bad replace them if none there then get a new one as they are more expensive to repair than replace. Most likely your magnatron shorted out and took the circuit with it, but check your house fuse as well on that circuit to be safe. A magnatron runs around 90bucks part only.

GE Spacemaker Microwave not working

Hopefully not!. Microwaves have a failsafe circuit built in that when they overheat they shut dowen for about 3/4 hr in severe cases and then reset themselves.
By now it has probably come back on line.

My JE 1860 microwave starts working when I open the door.

It sounds like the door switch is bad. It may be that the switch is shorted inside. I would think it may really run with the door open, and microwave you.

Power loss then surge GE JE 1860 Microwave

Well it does appear that you have an intermittent problem. I do not think that there is a loose ground problem, but there is a thermal switch attached to the case of the magnetron that resemble the thermal switches in wall gas heaters. Like the one in wall heaters they tell the heater when to shut off and on. If that switch begins to open or is trying to open it will make it seem like your microwave wants to shut down. Of course that is just one solution which I think is the best. By the way that thermal switch only has two wires that go to it and resembles an oversized watch battery when it is out. What could cause that also is if those two wires which are connected with plugin spade terminals have become loose due to the vibration of the magnetron over the years. To cover all your bases at once, with the power off, take the cover off and reseat all the spade connectors that you can see and get to. Anything in line with that switch or with the power coming in at all can cause the same thing. Let me know if there is any other question that you have.

Below refers to the manuals which all contain the wiring diagram.

Inside the actual case. It is not consumer accessible. Over-the-range models have the manual behind the grille or control panel.

Microwave Turn Table

This could be a failing turntable motor, but more likely your turntable support has gotten bent. That's an easier and cheaper problem to solve. Excessive heat can sometimes make the legs of the support bend so that the center is raised up far enough that it won't always make good contact with the motor. You can test this by running the microwave empty for a few seconds. It may hesitate to turn or stutter. Next try it with a bowl with several cups of water in it. The extra weight may push it down so it makes good contact and runs without a hitch. The way I fix these is to use a stove burner or a torch to heat up the legs and bend them up a bit. Then I quickly set up or clamp the support so it's held in the proper position for a few minutes until it cools. One way to hold the heated support in position is to place an object under the end of each leg and put something slightly heavy on top of it in the middle. If you need a new motor or just want to see helpful exploded views of your model, see the GE or Sears parts Web site: http://www.geappliances.com/shop/prts/ http://www3.sears.com/
