Question about Washing Machines

Maytag washer will not spin, clutch slipping

Too heavy load of towels had worn the belt on our washer. It had stopped and smoked a couple of time but we caught it in time. Well the belt got stopped in a spin cycle and burned through. After replacing the belt, now the spin cycle just jumps the slip clutch on the bottom of the shaft for the drum. It washed the clothes just fine. I unloaded everything and it still will not spin. I even turned the drum by hand to make sure nothing was caught.

The washer is 8 years old. The part that is clacking is the one way plastic clutch? at the bottom of the machine under where the spin belt goes.

It looks like the Helix gear is slipping. The pulley above this gear has too much slop between it and the brake and the bottom helix gear. I did have a new belt on, not exactly the correct belt, was slightly smaller and too tight. I have since taken it back off and the Helix gear is still too loose, but the bolt on bottom is tight. It has a racheting noise when trying to spin. The washer agitated fine during wash.

Thr reason the washer will agitate but not spin is, the motor actually rotates in the opposite direction to determine spin and agitate cycles. Still time to go shopping. The repair would cost as much as a new machine.

The clutch unit is not plastic it is encased in steel the plastic piece you are seeing is the drain pump. If any clicking or non preformance is taking place in the Spin/ agitate transmission I repeat you need a new one. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a fairly good one at the metal pile at your local santation facility,OR it's time to go shopping!

When its on the final spin and completed clothes are still wet

The pump is mounted on the motor so the water is removed and that means the lid switch is working. I think you might have a broken drive coupling. Almost certainly it could be the coupling. This is a common failure of these machines. It can be triggered by washing a heavy load. themobilian_1495.jpgthemobilian_1496.jpgthemobilian_1497.jpgthemobilian_1498.jpgthemobilian_22.pngthemobilian_1499.jpg
That is the simple answer and should fix the problem but what IF the coupling is ok?
Then you gotta dig deeper into this machine. Let me know.

Will not spin fast, when it spins you can rase lidmby pass door switch and stop itfrom spinning

  • The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

  • A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

  • The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

  • The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

  • The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

  • The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.

Spins , but not fast enough to get water out of clothes.

I had exactly the same probelm on my four year old Roper. I took the clutch apart and it had some foreign material on the white plastic clutch surface. I cleaned it up with fine sand paper and also used some emery cloth on the stainless steel "cup" that the clutch bears on. To increase the tension on the spring I added a couple of washers at each end. The washer now spins just like new. If your clutch is really warn out - down to the rivet surface you can get a new one for about $40 from most appliance repair shops

Bad/worn/broken lid switch look at the back of the lid there is a little lid cam there that hits a switch,if this switch isn't engaging it will do just what you are describing.use a small screw driver to push the button in and see if it starts.

Replaced broken washer belt, but drum still won't spin.

you may have a bad bearing in a pulley, could be motor coupling. Take belt off and spin motor shaft and pulley both ways if it's free, then its more than likely not the motor. Now spin the drum with belt off and see if it does the same as with the belt on if it does it has to be a bad bearing or coupling to the drum. hope this helps

    PEACE,
    NGAFM1 AT YOUR SERVICE

It pumps, but doesn't spin If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

    * The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

    * The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

    * A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

I am also expiriencing the same situation.
I took a look at the machine and it appears to be in good working order.
But the belt does appear to be in need of replacing. I have ordered one and should find out everything will be back to normal once it is installed.
The worn belt would explain a lot.
    - Light load are fine due to the lack of power needed to spin the contents.
    - Heavy loads need the maximum amount of power it can get to spin.
But does not because the belt is slipping further into pulley grooves and is probably partially slipping, due to the wear.
