Sounds like a CCD image sensor problem, not a do-it-yourself repair, but this would also definitely fall under warranty repair. The IXUS 970IS is a relatively new camera, and thus your camera should likely still be under warranty. Recommend that you contact Canon directly to arrange warranty repair. If in US or Canada, call 1-800-OK-CANON. All others, www.canon.com, select "Support" and then your Region for further info in your local area.

How about brand new images just taken, are they also black? If so, this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager.
