Unfortunately the memory slot at the back got damaged,
don’t want to accept memory card any more. I’m now left with only 256mb memory
under the keyboard which I want to upgrade to 1gb. To remove the keyboard is no
problem, loosen two screws from the back and then clips on the sides and bottom
of keyboard. But when keyboard is removed you get to an aluminium plate which I
    don’t know how to remove.

It is a laptop LG LE50 Express. It has two memory slots one underneath the laptop(which is damaged) and one underneath the keyboard. I can see the memory through a cut-out in the aluminium panel underneath the keyboard. The problem is how to remove the aluminium panel?

The slot is accesible by removing the entire black bottom of the laptop (a bad design issue, btw), so the best you can do (if you havn't solved this yet), is to take the laptop to a suitable place that not just sells the DDR memory, but where they can also install it, and, if you condition your buying the memory to having it installed on the laptop, they will probably do it for the same price, after all, they want to sell!, or at the most, they'll do it for a few extra dollars, which will save you from the teddious (ans risky) task of disassembling it yourself. You can also request a quote for repairing the damaged slot, maybe it's not too expensive. Good luck! Richard.

Bad news is that you need to remove the keyboard from your laptop to get to the memory slot. Have you looked at the bottom of the laptop to see whether there is a port to the memory under there? Memory usually is much more easily reachable than to go through the keyboard first.

Forgive my confision. Is this a desktop or laptop? Desktops don't usually have memory slots under the keyboard. Laptops don't either, as most of them are under a port on the bottom of the laptop case itself.

If that area is damaged, and you are left with no other place to add memory, you can use a large USB Jump Drive to augment a Vista laptop, but that will not really solve your problem. It soulds as if you need to have your laptop professionally repaired, so that the memory module will fit in the laptop again.

Sorry for the possibly bad news.

Have you looked to see if the aluminum panel you speak of is accessible from the bottom of the laptop? You can see it under the keyboard, but it may only be removeable from the bottom of the laptop, where the other memory goes.

I really am not familiar with this machine. I would recommend going to the manufacturer's web site and searching for a manual for that model laptop, as there must be a diagram in the manual to help you figure this out.

This is all Google shows for that model laptop:

See if it can help you.

How can i get to both memory slots so i can upgrade to 2GB of Ram? Thanks

Your laptop has two memory slots. One of the memory slots (external) can be easily accessed if you remove the cover on the bottom of the laptop.

The second (internal) memory slot is located under the keyboard.

Keyboard removal procedure:
1. Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery.
2. Remove two screws securing the keyboard on the bottom of the laptop. These screws are marked with a small keyboard symbol.
3. Release 4 keyboard retention tabs located on the left side from f1, f5, f9 and delete keys.
4. Lift up the keyboard and place it upside down on the palm rest.
5. Unlock the keyboard cable connector on the motherboard.
6. Remove and replace the keyboard.

Hope this helps. Thank you for using FixYa.

How to fit memory to laptop compaq armada e500

most hp/compaq laptops will have memory slots located under the keyboard, and sometimes an additional memory slot accessed through a panel on the bottom of the notebook.
In your case, you have 2 memory slots located under the keyboard. Officially, this unit only supports up to 256 mb memory modules for a maximum of 512 MB of memory so if you already have that, be aware that larger capacity memory modules may not work.

Memory module

There is a cover on the bottom of the machine that the memory is under. If there is only one slot under this cover, then the other slot will be under the keyboard. There are two memory slots on this machine, and it will hold up to 4g of memory.
