Question about GE GSH22JFR Side by Side Refrigerator

Open Question

GE, "Tfx25zr" Refrig. The Compressor has stop-no cool.Fan works

I failed to clean the vents last year. It may have overloaded. The schematic shows an overload switch on the compressor. It also shows a relay on the compressor. I have replaced the defrost timer and run capacitor on an older unit prior to this one. Do you have any idea whats wrong, can I bypass the overload switch to see if it's burned out, or the relay? I also have a VOM.
My last Refrig. I installed a hard start capacitor, and that fixed it,but it used too much power. What do you think. No burned wiring smell, or anything visably wrong.

SOURCE: low voltage at compressor!

My parts lookup too has no images available for you refrig but i believe it to be a GE Profile with a fresh food fan (and air duct down the center of the fresh food side). All fan motors are 12vdc and run off the Lowvoltage side of motherboard. i assume you are checking voltage to comp from motherboard? How did you check relay?? Have you axcessed motherboard?? On the top of (I say top-- i belive its mounted horiz on yours but all the small wires are on the right) is all the low voltage fan motor, damper, control wiring On the bottom (or the left) side of the motherboard is the larger line voltage wiring. The connector with 3 wires is labeled def -- comp---line it should be blue. Try jumping L1 to comp. ((Just so ya know Def will energize the def heater regardless of compartment temp it does have a bimetal but it only a safety set at 100deg in case relay on board welds shut---it monitor evap compartment, frz, fresh food, (two seperate in FF) in your model))

SOURCE: The starter/overload and overload protector

The easiest way to find this out , is to check the condenser. Make sure that the condenser is not clogged up with dust and that the condenser fan is working. Replace the start relay. Turn it back on. If it starts right up then it probably overheated and melted the relay due to the condenser fan not working or the condenser clogged with dust. Air circulation through the condenser and air being circulated over the compressor in how it cools itself. If the compressor will not start or if it runs for a little while and then shuts off from overheating, then you have a bad compressor.

SOURCE: Refrigerator does not cool.

Ok , I'll help you .
Pull the refrig out from the wall , and unplug . Remove the 8 " X 10 " panel on the back of the refrig . Inside this panel , is the main control board .
Remove the blue plug with 3 larger wires going to it . Looking at the plug , you will see : wire1 , wire2 , space , wire3 . Get a short piece of insulated wire , and remove about 1/4 inch of insulation , from both ends . Insert 1 end of the wire , into the slot of wire2 , and the other end , into wire3 .
Plug the refrig back in .
After about 2 min , look inside the freezer , behind the bottom crisper , and look for a red glow . This glow , is the defrost heater .
If no glow , this is an indication of a shorted defrost heater , or bad defrost thermostat , both of which are located behind the rear freezer panel . Unplug the refrig , and reinstall the blue connector , and the 8 x 10 panel .
The pt # for the heater is WR51X10101 , and the part number for the defrost bimetal is WR50X10068 . Both should be replaced . The heater is at the bottom of the coils , held on by 2 screws , and the thermostat , is clipped on the top right of the coils , with a blue and pink wire going to it .
If you do see a red glow , reasemble as above , and remove the rear inside freezer panel . At the top of the coils , on the left , you will see 2 white wires attached to a 1 " piece , which is clipped to the coils . This piece is the # 4 thermistor ( evaporator thermistor ) . Pt # WR55X10025 . Also replace the # 5 thermistor , ( freezer thermistor ) which is at the bottom of the panel , slid into a holder , also with 2 white wires going to it . Both thermistors , sent readings of temp , by coldness resistance , to the main control board , which then decides if it needs to defrost , or cycle off due to coldness reached .

SOURCE: bad overload relay

Do not go with the 3 in 1 start kit ! This is only a temporary " fix " . The part number you need , is 61006186 . This is the direct replacement , for the overload / relay , on your refrig .

GE Artica PSS25MGMB Stopped cooling/freezing, everything else works, lights, fans, just no cold and no compressor start sounds?

I would suspect the start relay and capacitor! With the clicks and buzzes, that is the most likely fault. Although you could replace one or the other of them, I always replace as a mated pair, because it seems that when one of them fails, the other one will fail shortly after. Items 733 and 734 on the following schematic (which also gives you an idea of what they look like and where they are located)

Making humming noise on and off and not cooling

Unplug the refrig and pull the refrig out and remove the lower panel covering the fan and compressor . On the compressor , is a small box ( overload/relay ) with 2 or 3 wires going to it . This part just plugs onto the side of the compressor . Take your complete model number with you so you get the correct part . If you had given the model number here , I could have given you the pt # . Also clean the coils in the front bottom of refrig , of dust , lint , pet hair , etc , as this could have caused the compressor to get hot and short the overload/relay .

My GE side-by-side refrigerator & freezer is not cooling.

Good day,
If it's been on for a while, the compressor should be warm. If the compressor has a relay box mounted on it's side, remove the cover, and pull off the relay, and overload and take them to an appliance parts house to be tested. If defective replace. If O.K. then .....
The compressor windings are out and the compressor is bad, or the motherboard on the back rear of the machine under a cover has failed.
Either case requires a service tech to properly test.

Pull the refrig out , and remove the back panel . Is the compressor running ? Is it hot ? Is the fan cooling the compressor , running ? If the compressor is not running , the piece on the side , with 2 or 3 wires going to it , is bad . If the fan is not running , replace the fan motor . The part number for the compressor piece ( overload/relay kit ) is 12002784 . It is easily replaceable . If the compressor is running , check the square black coil box ( condensor coil ) , to make sure it is clean . Is clean , check the fan in the freezer , to make sure it is working .

My GE Adora side by side refrig. has stopped making ice and I am having a hard time regulating the settings on it. The freezer is too cold and the refrig. section isn't cold enough. I also have noticed...

Defroster circuit/timer has failed.

The water line to the icemaker has probably frozen,so no ice. The cooling coils are in the freezer, and the cold air moves to the fridge via vents and circulation fan.

When it all ices up, no air gets to fridge, fridge gets warm.

Many models have a mechanical defroster timer located under the lower front kick panel. Manually rotate the timer until you hear the compressor stop.

Defroster heater then should come on and you hear scorch/hiss/gurgle of defrost sounds. If the timer is working, the fridge should come back on after about a half hour or so.

Sometimes timer fails, sometimes heater element fails. There is also a defrost thermostat that's part of the heater assembly.

Side by side refridge was dirty and I cleaned

I would pull the refrig out , and remove the back panel , covering the compressor and fan motor . Check to see if the fan is working . Fan not working , causes the divider panel , to get very hot . Also , fan not working , causes the compressor to over heat and cut off on the overload .

It is the compressor that has failed. The hum is it trying to start and the following click is the overload protector opening. What is the temperature where the refrigerator is located? Allow the compressor to cool down before trying to restart it. If it still does not restart after it has cooled off it is done.
