i tried 2 different power supply's on this machine and the same on the other machine, both chargers work fine on one machine so i have ruled out the chargers as the issue. batteries are also working on both machines so they are not the issue either. i have replaced the power jack on this machine so i think that may be the issue. the power jack in built onto a card seperate from the main mother board so i think i need to replace the whole card rather than just the jack. Do you know where i might be able to buy the power card ?.

Hello, its most likely the power jack burned out which is cheaper than putting in a new motherboard by a long shot. I do those repairs all day long for about $90. Hope this helps.

Laptop charger smells

Laptops (esp. older ones) should never be left plugged in 24/7. You need to stop using the charger (the problem is only in the charger and NOT the laptop?) and replace it. The burning smell is something overheating which can lead to a fire and sparks are rarely a good sign.

I'd cut the cord on the charger, so it can't be used again and replace it.

My medion laptop can't start up

Remove main battery and power on, next! remove 1 stick of ram and try again, no change! remove second piece and put back the first, no result! test the power supply charger for correct voltage, if okay! the DC jack in the laptop sometimes breaks free from the motherboard. I suggest a professional to assess.

The power supply is probably the problem but should be tested first, ebay is a good place to find laptop power supply replacements.

My computer just stop now i want to turn it on it doesnt work ...my charger is still good because the indicator light burns but when i connect it to the laptop it stops burning the screen just went black...

Hello.

The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.

The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.

Dear Sirs, I'm from Holland and did use for three years now a Medion MD96418 to full satisfactory operation sofar. Last weekend suddenly a nasty smell got around the laptop and the charger did not charge...

F.Wolf, from the diagnoses given by you, the Medion laptop could have just sustained a Power Circuit Board damage, or it may be worse, and could be the motherboard.

The only way to find out is to open the laptop, (ALL power removed. AC adapter and Battery), and;

1) Physically inspect for visual damage to the Power Circuit Board, and the motherboard.
Not a very good diagnoses technique other than for apparent damage.

2) Buy, and install a Power Circuit Board.

3) Next in line is to replace the motherboard.

Due to the cost of just the Power Circuit Board alone, I feel this is redundant.
Also borderline redundancy, due to I hate just changing out parts to see if it cures the problem.

Quick search on the internet for a Power Circuit Board, for the Medion MD96418,

http://www.mattotechinternational.nl/E_frame.html?http://www.mattotechinternational.nl/Powerboard+Medion+MD96418++E_art_197.html

(As you can see the DC Power Jack is mounted on the Power Circuit Board, and the Power Circuit Board is a separate circuit board from the motherboard.
It could BE just a bad Power Circuit Board)

For the Power Circuit Board cost alone, I feel you're well on your way towards the purchase of a decent used laptop.

Which brings us to removing the Harddrive, installing it in a decent, affordable external enclosure, and obtaining the information off of the drive.

I haven't repaired a Medion MD94600 series of Notebook PC.
I can't find at present a Service Manual online to give to you for disassembling the laptop, nor can I find the specifications.

Therefore I cannot tell you if your need a 2.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure, or a 2.5 SATA external enclosure.

( A laptop harddrive is 2 and 1/2 inches across in Width.
2.5
63.5 Millimeters)

The drive will have IDE or SATA marked on it, or you can use the Model Number online to look up the specifications.

This is one example of a decent (IMHO) 2.5 IDE external enclosure, (PATA)

This is one example of a decent 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2783

[ You may find information here, to help in disassembly to replace the Power Circuit Board, should this be the direction you wish to take,

Notebook smells like burning plastic.

If the new Targus charger is really rated correctly for your laptop, your battery isn?t charging and you smell the burning plastic coming from the laptop when you plug it in that is a fairly dangerous situation and you shouldn?t plug it back in anymore. The power from the charger runs through a PCB board which distributes power to other components in your laptop. I suspect one of the components (probably a capacitor) had a catastrophic failure and is the cause of the smell and the lack of battery charging. Once again assuming that the Targus is the correct one for your laptop current you probably have a laptop damaged beyond home or economical repair.
