When you turn on the machine

    - do you see the POST messages from the motherboard BIOS?
    - do you see the Windows XP logo?

At what point does the screen go blank?

Hello, I have a problem with hp pavilion dv

Try lowering your display settings when it is hooked up to the external monitor. Then try the laptop screen again.
Right click an open area of the desktop, select properties, click the display tab. In the lower left of the box there is a settings slider, try lowering the settings and see if it gets better.

Need a recovery disc for Pavilion dv-5 notebook

Hi:
You most likely have a bad hard drive, and a disk set is not going to help you, though you will need it too.
What you need is a new hard drive, a copy of all the drivers for your laptop, which you can download for free from HP. If HP won't send you a copy of the recovery disk, you can use any OEM copy of the same operating system that your laptop has a sticker for, but you won't have all of your programs.

IE 7

Yes you can upgrade your Internet Explorer to IE7 (assuming you have IE6 right now)

You can download and install IE7 from Windows updates or go to the Windows Support Site to download it at http://support.microsoft.com

Only upgrade to IE7. Do not download and install IE8 Beta. It is still in testing. IE7 will not cause any problem with your HP Pavilion.

I recently removed and replaced the same hard drive in my laptop which is an HP Pavilion 4400. I booted it up today and I get a message that says there is no operating system detected. The computer will...

Sounds like you bought your new hard drive clean with no . You simply need to put in a boot disc, such as a windows XP installation disc for example, and go through and install the operating system. Look through your CDs you got with your laptop to find a disc with a windows operating system on it, for example Windows XP Home. It may say 'press any key to boot from disc...' along the line so just press any key and you will be on your way to setting up your new system

Hope This Helps

VIA KM400A is the name of the motherboard chipset inside your computer.

I'm fully familure with that board.

1. on boot up hit delete or F2 key to enter the bios setup screen
2. once inside the bios setup screen , look for power management settings.

you'll know what to do at that point

You'll want to

1. turn power nanagement totaly off , which is not a good idea because windows considers
it a device in the system and loads a driver for it , so turning it totaly off MIGHT give windows
a heart attack.

2. set

Display Power Management Controled by Power Management = NA or NO

Turn off display after suspend or hybernate = NO

3. save and reboot

Thank you for choosing FixYa!

This error message may appear when the computer BIOS is set to boot from a network and cannot find a bootable operating system on the network or on any of the storage devices included in the notebook PC's boot path.

The following steps are for most HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario Notebook PCs. The boot order can be configured on the Advanced tab in the BIOS settings menu. The steps to modify the boot order may vary depending on the model of your computer. On most HP notebooks the boot order can be configured using the following steps:
  1. Turn on or restart the computer.
  2. While the display is blank, press the F10 key to enter the BIOS settings menu. NOTE: Some notebook PCs use the F2 or F6 key.
  3. Use the right and left arrow keys to select the Advanced tab.
  4. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Boot Order .
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to change the boot order.
Reset the boot order to the default settings Use the following steps to reset the boot order to the default settings:
  1. Turn on or restart the computer.
  2. While the display is blank, press the F10 key to enter the BIOS settings menu.
  3. Press the F9 key to reset the BIOS to default settings.
  4. Press the F10 to save the changes and exit the BIOS settings menu.

I think it will you to fix your problem.
If still have problem then tell me more about it.

Thanks
Iqbal

If windows still boots ( and the original hard drive is still in the computer) you can click the start button and find the HP Recovery Manager under the All Programs list. It is probably tucked away under one of the HP tabs.

If windows doesn't boot, and you still have the original hard drive you can press F11 when your first turn it on at the HP logo screen. It should start the recovery program. (The F key can be different on different laptops but most recent HP's are F11)

Be careful, doing a System Restore will erase all your Data, so backup anything important!
