Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Having a convergence problem, I replaced the convergence ICs, STK392-110, and the associated resistors. Now, when I power up, I get a few compact lines across the middle of the screen, which start flashing after 20 seconds or so, then the screen goes blank. I've double checked the soldering and the wiring connections. Any idea what I may have wrong?

Hi,

burn out as well because of the short in these ic's. Be sure to be extrremely careful unsoldering and soldering and use good heat sink compound and fasten securely to the heatsink metal. Manual convergence calibration may be necessary after the ic's are replaced. First try Touch Focus after the ic's have been Properly replaced. This repair should be done by competent personnel and takes about 3 hours because of dis-assembly and re-assembly time. I am writing this because i have seen on this site mis-leading info. i come to these sites myself to verify part numbers and to see if there have been additional complications such as complete shut-down.

Convergence amp brings all the colors together. It could very well be that. Makes sense. Have him explain it to you and have him change it out.
To converge is to bring something all together. You colors are not all together.

The problem is bad eproms on the digital convergence board. They lose their memory and convergence goes out. You can enter the service menu and manually adjust all three colors back into linearity but chances are it will go out again. It can take upwards of 4-8 hours to manually adjust. Per Toshiba the digital convergence board part number 23706371 (PB6340B) is no longer available, although if you contact Toshiba they may direct you to the part somewhere else? Good luck.

You may have a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

What has normally happened is that the convergence output driver ic's either one or both of them has shorted. Causing your picture to be un-converged, The Symptom of your failure can take on many different looks, so one explanation of what the failure looks like will not be adequate. It will be basically one or more (red,Green,Blue) crt's are not aligned correctly, and colored shifted, and distorted picture of some kind will be seen. Auto focus will not fixit and may even make it worse. When these ic's short, they can cause one or more pico fuse to blow. Allot of people ignore this part of the repair and get themselves into trouble. Please listen to my warning, and make sure you check these fuses!

Thats a convergence failure. often you can replace the two Ics and associated resistors to repair the issue yourself instead of replacing the convergence board. But you can get the ICs and resistors from www.tvrepairworld.com which includes free tech support for help installing the parts. They also have circuit boards for most models available if you choose to replace the board instead of trying to repair it.

I have a Panasonic Projection Monitor PT-47WX52C.When I turn on power it blinks 3 times .What do I have to do to repair it? Thanks Kathy

You will need to replace both convergence ICs and also possibly the associated low ohm resistors, since the 3 blinks is indicating that the convergence has failed. The PT47WX52 convergence repair kit is available from www.tvrepairworld.com which has the two ICs , heat sink paste, low ohm resistors and the CD with repair instructions.

Convergence ICs are Big Black ICs and will have the part number on them. STK392-110,
upgrade to 120s or 150s better ICs.
Resistors to replace are RK42 3.3ohms, RK46 1.8 ohms, RK50 2.7ohms,RK54 1.5, RK58 3.9 ohms. RK62 2.2ohms
Mats Electronics has STK ICs 1-800-628-1118 order convergence Kit that comes with resistors.
ACME has the Convergence resistors they must be 1 watt resistors 1-800-575-9833

Let me know if you need any more help Thank You.

I have a 53 inch hitachi ultravision #53UDX10B Its out of focus and when you press the magic focus button it trys then pops up with the # 4 in the corner is this a convergence problem or what ?

Yes, you have a convergence failure. Usually requires replacement of 2 X STK ICs and any burnt resistors associated with the function that is faulty.

Look at the user menu and compare with images on our Convergence Gallery. Try to adjust in the convergence adjust menu. Identify the functions that do not work and make note. When you replace the ICs, pay special attention to the low ohm resistors for the non-working function. They will be located near the colored plug associated with the non-working function. If red vertical will not adjust, check resistors near the red plug.

There are many posts and websites that offer "new and improved Convergence IC substitutes. My advice is to use the original part numbers and replace any burnt resistors with original values. Many ICs purchased on the Internet are very poor quality and do not work. Many users get substitute replacement ICs and never get their TVs working again.

If you have other electronics repair experience, this job may be done with some chance of success. If you have no experience, there are many secondary problems that can and usually do appear. Determining how to fix the secondary faults and how to correctly align the TV is difficult without prior convergence repair experience.

Some of the common problems encountered are:
1. Poor solder techniques, resulting in damaged PC boards or poor solder connections.
2. Poor quality or wrong parts installed and recognizing this problem.
3. Resistors open or burnt. Some resistors are weakened by the initial faulty IC. Replacing with a "good" IC and starting the TV causes the weakened resistors to burn up. IC may be ok but there are one or more open resistors that measured ok when ICs were being replaced.
4. Wrong ICs used, causing resistors to burn up.
5. Resistors that measure normal and become faulty when heated by current flow.
6. Recognizing that convergence circuit is repaired correctly and alignment is needed.
7. Major alignment in service menu required because data is corrupted by multiple tries of magic focus or manual adjustment while faulty circuit conditions exist.
8. Major alignment required because user adjusted centering rings or physically changed mechanical focus adjustment, then mis-adjusted convergence settings trying to correct mechanical alignment faults.
9. User has not connected plugs and connectors correctly and caused secondary damage or mis-alignment trying to correct secondary issue.

Physically replacing the ICs may appear simple but recognizing if a fault still exists or if correct repair is required causes many attempts at repair to fail. Keep it simple. Replace with good quality original part numbers, measure suspect resistors and adjust only what is necessary.

There are only 3 things to fix, IC failure, resistor failure and user induced secondary faults. Data processor and memory is bulletproof.

Convergence

Panasonics will usually need the 2.2 ohm 2watt resistors replaced with the ICs , as usually at least one will blow possibly two when the ICs fail. If you didnt replace the resistors you will also most likely need to replace the ICs again as a bad resistor will ruin new ICs usually

Convergence if distorted

Distorted is the classic sign of bad Convergence ICs and possibly the resistors that power them. Check the resistors right next to the ICs and replace both conversion ICs.

Tv troubleshoot for me

chances are that IC804 has failed. You have two ICs that allow you to converge the three colors. IC804 is used for Red Horizontal and Vertical Convergence and also for Green Vertical Convergence. IC805 is used for Blue Horizontal and Vertical Convergence and also for Green Horizontal Convergence. These ICs run very hot and have a very high failure rate which sometimes will cause damage to resistors in their associated circuits. They are both STK-110 and it's best to replace them both at the same time. It's also a good idea to upgrade them to either STK-150 or STK-180. These will run a lot cooler than the STK-110.

Before replacement do inspect for any open or overheated resistors as I stated earlier. Being you only have problems with Red Convergence the plus and minus power supplies should be okay since they are common to both ICs.

Try www.tritronicsinc.com. They have the Hitachi CZ00433 (STK392-150) in stock for $20.11 ($32.43 retail). These are Hitachi OEMs. I've had very good results replacing STK392-110s with these chips. Do check for open or overheated resistors before replacing these chips
