Burning plastic smell range

My Smeg cooker worked fine for 5 years. Then I noticed that the fan which stays on after you turn off the oven did not ever turn off, unless you switched the oven off at the fuse box. I think this is a fan that cools the oven down, but some bit of it is now broken because it doesn't realise that the oven has cooled down. It smells funny when you first turn it on, so I don't know if that is an electrical fault smell. Model possibly 70cm A420-5, but could be an earlier model (bought in April 2000). Is double oven with 4 rings on top, 70cm wide.

I've had the same problem and have had the thermo-protector switch replaced four times. After the last time I was so ********** I wrote to the CEO at Whirpool/Kitchen Aid in Benton Harbor, MI with my complaint. Today I received a call from an extremely nice lady in his office who said that they were sending me an updated kit for repair free of charge. The part number is 9759243. She offered that this was a known problem but was limited to just one production run - my luck!

If you pull out the drawer at the bottom of the stove, there is a brass fitting that needs to be tightened with a 1/2" wrench.

If this is a new range the odor is coming from the binder used to install the insulation in the range. You would need to put it through a self clean cycle of at least four hours to burn off this binder. I would suggest that you do it on a nice day when you are staying home and can open the windows as it will smell quite horrid for a while.
