Hi Liz, it's Jack at Dyson.

It's normal for harmless static generated in use to cause fine dust particles to cling to the inside of the clear bin and cyclone, including the section visible behind the fine mesh shroud. Please be assured this will not affect performance in any way, as the airflow doesn't need to pass through these dust particles.

The section behind the shroud is not designed to be accessed or cleaned, so please don't attempt to do this in case damage is caused. You can remove any loose dust particles from inside the cyclone pack by tapping it gently when you empty your machine after use.

Hi,

CLEANING BEHIND THE CYCLONE MESH
1. Detach the Cyclone and bin from the main body as you would when emptying.
2. Standing over a bin. empty the contents of the cyclone by pulling the bin flap release button upwards.
3. Whilst the flap is still down detach the bin from the cyclone by pushing up the button on the middle of the cyclone.
4. Sit the bin to the side as you dont need to use it.
5. Get a pair of pliers
6. Use the pliers to pull the fins from the bottom of the cyclone. 1 by one you will hear them click out of position. When you pull the 4th and final fin the baffle will detach and you will then be able to clean the baffle and also the cyclone.

Howto remove fine dust collected behind gauze mesh

Hi Gillian, it's Jack at Dyson.

Let me reassure you that it's normal for fine dust to cling to parts of the clear bin and cyclone pack, including behind the fine mesh shroud. This is caused by harmless static, and has no effect on performance as airflow doesn't have to pass through the dust.

To help prevent dust from building up, try tapping the cyclone pack firmly as you empty your machine. This will dislodge much of the clinging fine dust.

Please do not wash or submerge the cyclone pack, as this is likely to cause damage to your machine not covered under guarantee.

Dc59 I removed the clear canister but the inside with the chambers with a mesh cover are filled with a fine powder. How to I clean?

I have the same buildup of very fine, powderlike, dust/dirt particles behind the mesh screen.

I do not doubt your technological explanation as to why/how this accumulation has occurred but there is another issue created by this buildup and an concern to go with it.

The issue is that this accumulation literally stinks. We have 4 cats and a dog which is likely why there is such an odor. There must be a way to remove this stuff.

The concern is that, after putting up with the stinky Dyson and the continued accumulation, the "dust" will eventually completely fill the space behind the mesh screen. When that screen is completely filled is the only solution we have is to spend another $600 for a new Dyson?

The Dyson is not your typical disposable technology that we often buy today. We chose to spend the extra $ for the Dyson because of the spirit cleaning of the unit. Had we known the unit would, within 6 mos., begin to stink and would likely need to be thrown away within two years we would have purchased a less expensive brand.

Since we have learned now that Dysons are stinky and disposable units we can run it under water, let it dry and hope for the best?

DC17 suction motor stopped

It could be that your cyclone needs to be replaced. Depending on how the unit was cleaned (the cyclone in particular). Some people who service these machines wash the cyclone with out completely dismantling it, they just fill it with water and shake stuff out of it. This can cause debris inside the cyclone to become lodged causing clogs. If after checking for clogs and if your changeover valve is working (the piece that moves back and forth on the side of the machine when you pull the handle back to vacuum carpets) and the machine is in the upright posistion and the hose doesn't work, then you probably have a cyclone problem.

When I vacuum the dirt and trash come flying out the back of the vacuum, what can I do to fix this?

The filter behind the unit is out of alignment or damaged.
so remove and clean the collected dirt, replace the filter, look for damage here to make the sucked dirt fly over.

Sweeper Brush doesn't turn.

Could be that too much hair, string, or long fibers have been collecting around the roller. Remove it and clean it off. Also check the duct behind roller that goes up into the connection hose. Ther most likely is some sort of blockage.

No suction for rugs but the hose works fine. Removed the canister and suction is at that point

Hello,

Remove the base plate and beater bar. Clean the suction cavity behind the beater bar. That's where they almost always plug up.
