You have to remove the whole cover. Do not break rivets. Remove the rest of old rope, then wind pulley/spring the direction it would turn if the rope was being pulled. When it's wound tight, back off to align hole in cover and pulley. Insert end of about an 8' rope from the outside the cover through the pulley and tie a single knot/loop. Then let the rope be drawn in by the pulley/spring.

How to fix a recoil rope starter on lawn and garden equipment.

This tip is to help you if your power equipment starter rope broke and needs to be replaced.
Step One: Prepare the equipment to be worked on by disconnecting the spark plug wire from the spark plug. This will prevent accidental startups while working on the engine.
Make sure safety systems are in place. If this is a ride on unit make sure the brake is set and the battery is disconnected.
Step Two: Remove the Starter housing or blower housing. The starter itself will have at least three fastening points and may vary in shape depending on the machine. It is not recommended to remove any rivets if you come across them. Most machines with rivets are part of a larger housing that needs to be removed.
Step Three: Remove the leftover rope and inspect the starter spring. Once off of the machine you can remove any old rope and test the spring. the spring test is to spin or charge the spring as if the rope was being pulled out. As long as tension builds up in the spring you are ready to put a new rope in. If the spring does not build tension order a new spring from a dealer like
Step Four: Charge the spring and install the rope. Charge the spring as mentioned above by rotating it as if the rope was being pulled. Once tight back the spring off one turn and put the rope into the starter through the housing and into the pulley. Tie a knot on either end ot the rope and then slowly let the rope into the starter (make sure the grip is between the two knots).
Step Five: Reinstall the starter housing on the machine and test.
I hope this helps. On my tecumseh tiller the rope broke and the setup has rivets instead of screws is there another way to get it off without removing the rivets?

I'm guessing you have a 3.5 or 4HP 4 stroke with the recoil built into the top of the housing? If so, just remove the entire blower housing. It's only 4 bolts. You can then disassemble the recoil assembly to replace the rope.

sounds like a briggs engine, DONT remove the rivits, go down a little further and remove the 4 3/8 bolts that hold the blower housing on.Turn it upside down, prewinf the pulley in the direction that it turns when the rope is being pulled. When it stops turning because the spring is tight, let it unwind one turn and line up the hole in the pulley with the hole in the metal part where the rope comes in and slip the rope in, tie a not and melt the freyed end. Let the starter pull the rope in by itself.

The starter rope broke on my Toro mower and the housing around it is riveted on. how do i get it off to replace the rope?

I cannot believe that someone suggested grinding off the rivets. If the bottom portion of the rivet falls down and gets caught by the magnet on your flywheel and you try to start it you are going to do some SERIOUS damage.

Here is the instructions DIRECT FROM BRIGGS & STRATTON:

This is a relatively simple process, but you have to be VERY careful when doing this. The spring is long, under some tension and has sharp edges. Anytime you are dealing with the manual rewind starter assembly, there is risk of the spring coming out and possibly injuring yourself or others. If you do not feel comfortable performing this repair, I strongly suggest visiting one of our many authorized dealers in your area and have them do this for you.
You will have to remove the gas tank2.gif to get at the rewind and blower housing. Remove the entire blower housing and rewind assembly and turn it upside down.
NOTE:You do not have to drill out the rivets to get to the back of the rewind assembly. This is only necessary if you are removing the ENTIRE rewind assembly, (metal housing and all) and are separating it from the blower housing.
You'll need a pair of vise grips or a screw driver, some rewind rope, a long thin sharp tip flexible object (the wire from a coat hanger may work) and a lighter handy.
 1. Take the pulley and start to turn it so that the rope becomes loose.
 2. Remove the rope.
 3. Once the pulley is all the way out, with the most tension, either use the screwdriver between the spokes of the pulley, or use the vise grips to hold the pulley in place; be careful not to place too much pressure on the vise grips, the plastic pulley may break!
 4. Make sure that the hole in the pulley lines up with the hole on the rewind assembly.
 5. Using the wire from the coat hanger, push the rope through the hole of the rewind and pulley. Pull the rope through the pulley and tie it off. Now use the lighter to burn the end of the rope to prevent the not from coming off.
 6. Now, remove the screwdriver or vise grips, while holding on to the pulley.
 7. SLOWLY let go of the pulley and the rope should feed back into the pulley as you do this.

I need to replace the pull starter cord on my self propelled Sears lawn mower with a Briggs & Straton engine. After removing the plastic cover the next cover is riveted on. How to proceed. How to I...

There will be bolts that hold the housing that have the rivet in. Remove the bolts and remove that housing. Make sure you have the right amount of cord and the proper size rope. You WILL NOT have to remove the rivets. Remove any rope that is still in the recoil pulley. Now you will have to have a small screwdriver or some thing that will be used to hold the pulley from unwinding. Now you have to turn the pulley counter clock wise. You want good tension. Put the screwdriver through the fins in the pulley so it won't unwind. Make sure you line up the hole in the pulley with the hole in the shroud. Put rope through and tie a knot. Tie the handle on and then remove the screwdriver and slowly let the rope back in. Try pulling a few times to make sure you have enough tension. When enough reassemble the shrouds and give it a pull.

Good luck

If your rope broke, there was no reason to take the spring out. The rope can be replaced just by taking the rewind housing off, turning pulley to get rest of old rope out, wind the pulley (and spring) the direction the rope would be pull it when starting. Then , when it's wound tight, back off to align the holes in pulley and cover. Hold it there, stick about an 8' piece of rope from the outside through the pulley and tie a knot. Hold the rope and let the spring pull the rope back into the starter. an tie handle back. Take your housing, and spring to a shop. They can re-install the spring and put on a rope a heck of a lot cheaper that buying that whole assembly.

Replacing starter rope on Briggs engine 133702, type 017002

On some models of mowers...depending on the maker of the mower, the rewind housing is bolted onto the engine cover with 3 screws. On the rest they are riveted and the only way to get to the crank rope is from underneath the housing...but, they do make refits for the mowers where you can replace the rivets with bolts
