Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a 10 year old Maytag washer. One the first of June I had a repair out because it would not spin and was making squealing noises when it tried to spin. He diagnosed the problem as the belt being crystalized. He replaced both belts and it seemed to have taken care of the problem. Now, 3 weeks later, it's doing the same thing again. It will not spin, there is a strong odor of rubber burning when it tries to spin. Obviously, the belt is slipping for some reason. I called the repairman again and he said the same thing about the belts had probably crystalized again. I asked him how that would be possible in just 3 weeks time when the original belts lasted 10 years. His reply was, "things aren't make as well as they used to be". We said he would order a set of belts and be out on Monday. I'm not sure I want him back if he can't fix it properly. Is it possible that there is not enough tension on the belts? He says that is controlled by the motor. I wonder too if he even used the right size belt. Please advise what you suspect and if you would find another repairman.

I have a Maytag washer that the agitator is not working , I makes a squealing noise, How do I repair this? Thanks

Your problem may be a seized water pump with the motor turning the drive belt on a water pump pulley that is not turning (belt squealing). Or the noise could be originating from a water pump that has a noisy/bad bearing. If the pump pulley is turning and making the noise, you may be able to lubricate the pump shaft with some quality shaft lubicant (no guarantee that the noise will cease)! If other problem, contact an appliance service company.

My MAV8600AWW top load washer makes a loud steady squeal whining noise in spin cycle. Load size doesn't affect noise. Machine is 7 years old. Any guess as to problem?

Maytag had problems with the berrings on the transmission . water gets in and the berring goes bad rorring as it spins. Dump it and get a Whirlpool.

Maytag washer makes loud grinding noise during the spin cycle

if it's making a noise then either your drain pump bearing is going out or your thrust bearing is going out (assuming the noise happens in both spin and wash). Tip the washer backwards so that you can get underneath of it. Take the belt off and spin the pump pulley on the right side. This should spin effortlessly.

The middle pulley is the trustbearing pulley. Spin this--- one direction it should have a little bit of resistance--- the other should have more resistance

MAYTAG top loader makes high pitched squeal when agitating/spinni

This is a classic symptom of pulley/motor shafts/bearings in need of lubrication. It's not the agitator. You'll need to take the back off (with power unplugged) to access.

Loud squeal during wash and spin cycles, maytag atlantis washer

Squealing normal occurs due to belt slippage. I would check your belts (look for cracks. Check the belt tension as well, most washers have an adjustment, normally on the motor that allows you to increase the tension of the belt.

If part of a belt gets torn and it is long enough, it will hit any part of the washing machine within range and make a clicking noise at every revolution of the motor.

I am pretty sure you need new belts. You should be able to remove a few screws and open the back cover. Between the pulleys there is a tensioner...loosen that so you can remove the belt easily. replace it with a new belt and adjust the tension.

hope this helps
