Dehumidifier not removing moisture

My Maytag dehumidifier is not removing moisture from air. The fan is running but not the compressor. I did notice for the first time that this unit has an intake air filter which was quite dirty, I have since cleaned it and put it back in but it still does not work. Any suggestions?
