Hi Dave: thanks for your post. Most of the names on the task manager I do not relate to 70 processes in all, about half have my name associated as User and the other half are System. I'm afraid to end them not knowing what will happen. What are these things?

Can I get some more information on what task manager is saying is taking all the resources? I've seen this before and it turned out to be some adware had snuck in and every time I would use IE7 it would double in size. Thanks to having dual procs I could get to resolve. When you go to Task Manager and look under services, see who keeps taking all your resources. Don't try anything too quickly. Try to rename the file where it is located on your PC. If you come up with an error that will let you go on, see what happens. If it is a deadly error, rename the file and we'll find another way

These are TSR's mainly ( terminate and stay resident ) I can understand the fear behind not wanting to "kill" your system by removing one of these from your system. I'm running Vista Home Ultimate and it is very similar - task manager wise to XP. I have 49 processes CPU usage 3% {+ - ) Physical Memory 26%.

I had a bad program snuck in there called SOPROC.exe It looked harmless and had something to do with loading software. It would spike out of controlon CPU usage and crush memory. I found the Subdir where this file was and renamed it soproc1.exe Next boot my system was a little angry that it couldn't load something, but went on unphased. My CPU and Memory, unless loading an Internet program stay pretty regular. You need to find the biggest hog, write down the name and location, try what I did, but have an emergency boot disk made to boot up and run an autoexec.bat to undo the change you made. I don't think you'll need that. Keep me informed, it's interesting.

Thanks for the insights comment, but, what the F*? Did you find who is grabbing all of your resources? Please try to send me some names of files and the location of them if possible. If I know what Directory they're coming from we can solve this problem, unless you already have and I congratulate you on that. You should never be running CPU above 10% unless loading something. Make sure your virtual memory settings are correct and you're not running out of VM.

What are my options to increase processing speed and RAM rather than purchase a new desk top

The RAM can be bumped to 2 GBs (2 x 1 GB PC3200) the processor you won't be able to. I'd recommend looking at refurbed computers I'm sure you could find one at least twice as good as this for $100 or less.

Can I upgrade my CPU to an Intel Core 2 duo 1.7

You are basically limited to what was optional on the model. So you can only upgrade to one of the following cpus:

Intel Pentium M 745 (1.8-GHz) with 400-MHz front
side bus (FSB)
Intel Pentium M 735 (1.7-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Pentium M 725 (1.6-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Pentium M 710 TJ85 (1.4-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB;
operates at a lower temperature than other processors
Intel Celeron M 340 (1.5-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Celeron M 330 (1.4-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB

And you are limted to 2gb of ram max on this model.

Installing sound drivers

First, visit this website:

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/gc/gc_drive.htm

Next up select Windows XP Professional as your operating system. Now click, "Drivers." The first result should be the Realtek drivers, which are what you're searching for. Download them. Once they finished downloading open the file and the drivers should be installed automatically.

If there's anything else I can help you with, let me know. If this solution solved your problem, please rate the solution.
