2000-0146 is indicating a hard drive failure which is why it won't boot.

how many hard drives can your laptop hold at one time and do you have an operating system install disk

the easiest way for you to recover your files (your hard drive is dead) is to install your operating system on your external hard drive. Put the cd in your laptop, hold in F2 at startup to enter bios and choose to boot from cd rom first. Choose the external hard drive as the drive to install windows to. Once you have it installed, your laptop is now a working computer again. Get online and download the free recuva from this site

Run that program to pull your files that you need off the damaged hard drive before it dies completely. The hard drive just needs to spin to recover. After you get all your files saved somewhere safe, replace the hard drive on the laptop and reinstall windows on it, transfer the files back to the new hard drive and you are good to go.
