This is from tha Canon USA website most probably if you were to have purchased a new printer and had this issue.

From Canon tech site.1. Load paper correctly then press Black or Color button (MP150)
2. Press ON/OFF switch to reset the multifunction device
3. Remove Packing Material MP150 / MP170 / MP450
4. Removing obstruction from ASF then press Black or Color button (MP150)
5. Reseat ink cartridge (MP150 / MP170 / MP450)
6. The MP150 may require repair

New cartridges also? It seems that maybe some gink has built up on the carriage. Maybe do a plate cleanig from the software under maintenance.

What photo paper are you using?

You may have to buy a new PG40 or CL41 carteidge.
These are chipped and tells the printer that the ink is exhausted.
The continuius system may have damaged the original cartridges
