Hi,i have a sony vaio (model PCG-7D1M) but have some trojans. i want to re-install my laptop to factory setting but dont have a recovery disk or installation disk which came with the laptop...can anyone advise me how i can do this?thanks
Well, firstly having trojans on your computer shouldnt be reason enough to reinstall the whole OS especially if they arent affecting you computer to such an extent that you cant even install other applications. So what you could try and do, install or update your antivirus, Run a scan and see if that changes anything. If you're not sure what antivirus will do the job, visit http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and get their free tool, it allows you to run scans during start-up, so if you have an trojans that are locked into memory, during start-up they can be removed.
As for running an new installation, You could get a more recent version of the OS your using and you could run an 'Upgrade' installation, it leaves all your programs intact.

You have to set the CD as the first boot device in the BIOS. When you power on the laptop press delete repeatedly until you are in the BIOS. You then have to browse trough the tabs until you find Boot Priority. On the first Priority set the CD-ROM and on the second Priority set your hard drive. Save the settings and exit.
The machine will reboot and will ask you to press any button to boot from disk. Press any button to launch the installer and you are on your way to install Windows.
Good luck! Let me know if this solution was useful!
Have tried to reboot it through its own internal memory w/out the discs? Restart your computer, get into your bios to go to factory restore and do it from there. You should be good to go from there w/out the discs. : )
If you got the recovery disk along with the Vaio laptop, good enough.Insert the disk and reboot, follow instruction displayed on the screen to restore.
If you dont have a disk, can try this :--
Reboot and press F11 to try and enter the system recovery mode, if you can then you're good, simply follow the prompts to perform a system recovery.
Are you doing DESTRUCTIVE recoveries or are you doing NONDESTRUCTIVE recoveries? Try another hard drive in the machine and recover to that. Nondestructive recoveries replace the operating system without destroying the personal data. Its possible the original problem is propagating over to the recovered systems. Do a destructive recovery. Understand any data not backed up will be destroyed. Possible the original problem was a trojan virus.
There should be a factory image on the HD when you try restarting it. Hold down the F8 key or F10 key while its rebooting this should start the recovery process you shouldnt need a windows disk.
