SOURCE: ASUS F3J DVD drive problem
LG and Samsung both make good drives - otherwise they would probably not be in business in the competitive market they are in. However, it would not be certain which one was "good" for your laptop.
The ASUS F3J series laptops all seem to share the same optical drive characteristics.
If you have established via system diagnostics that the DVD is faulty and needs replacing, then I recommended best practice would be to replace it with the standard DVD drive replacement part from ASUS. If your warranty is still valid, then you could have it replaced it under warranty.
It is "best practice" to use an ASUS part, because, if you do not, then you may have problems:
(a) problems installing the non-standard replacement part into the laptop housing (i.e., it just won't fit in, or, even if it does then it may not fit securely or neatly into the laptop housing).
(b) problems finding the correct Windows driver for the new hardware part (i.e., when Windows auto-detects the new hardware and tries to find a driver.)
The ASUS F3J series optical drives all seem to be spec'd as either:
DVD COMBO: 8X/ 24X24X24X (max.)
DVD Super Multi: 5X/8X/4X/8X/4X/24X/10X/24X/8X
So, you might consider the alternative of getting an external USB DVD which at least matches one or both of those specs. The USB drive will come with the appropriate drivers.
Hope this helps/is of use. :-)
