Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

My Advantium oven is mounted directly above my stovetop. I was boiling water for pasta, and a great deal of condensation formed on the Advantium. After the indicent, the Advantium controls started working strangely. Before, when you'd twist the select knob, the menus would scroll either upward or downward depending upon the direction you turned the knob. But now, it only scrolls from up to down, regardless of which direction you turn the knob. For example, when you push the knob it goes to the highest alpha menu option, then scrolls down toward the lowest alpha item. If you select Time, it starts at 15 seconds. When turn the knob, it goes right to 99 minutes, and regardless of which way you turn the knob, it only decrements downward. I'm still ablt to use the oven, but it's a pain to operate the controls now. So, I think the steam from the pasta damaged the unit. I did unplug the unit, waited a few minutes, then replugged it and reset the clock etc. but it didn't help. Is there a reset function?

Avantium 120 Oven Control Knob stopped working correctly. My Advantium oven is mounted directly above my stovetop. I did unplug the unit, waited a few minutes, then replugged it and reset the clock etc. but it didn't help. Is there a reset function? PS. It has been more than a month since the malfunction started, and I live at 8,000 ft. elevation, so I'm sure the unit has dried out thoroughly by now.

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for maybe an hour.

Then let us know if the hard reset does not fix it.

Can you post a good photo of what the display shows?

Condensation between door glasses

This moisture can accumulate from certain types of cooking (lots of boiling) in the microwave or in extreme cases, from a blocked grease filter or exhaust vent duct.

Spills or large amounts of accumulated moisture should be wiped off. Minor amounts can dry out by themselves easier if you leave the door open after cooking.

Also, when boiling on the stovetop, you should always use the hood vent exhuast fan to keep steam and grease out of the controls and the door area of the microwave. I always recommend using the vent fan with any cooking on the stovetop.

As long as it is not rusting the metal mesh screen or other parts of the door, it can be allowed to dry out over a period of days with the door open.

If it is a convection microwave, using the convection heat will help it dry.

How to replace door switch on advantium

Happened to my 2005 Advantium120 twice, both times after extended cooking/simmering on the cooktop (17" below). Solution was to leave unplugged for a good 48 hours (to dry out?) then plug in again and all is good. GE says to either raise the microwave 4" or stop boiling pasta on the stove, neither a good solution. Good luck!

You will need to remove the top grill vent first, then you can remove the screws coming in from the top of the grille vent then that will expose a screw holding down the control panel at the top. Remove the screw and remove the control panel. The fuse is located in a little 1" fuse holder just behind the front panel near the top.

Usually there are 3 or 4 mounting bolts located in the floor of the cabinet above. First you will have to disconnect the power and then the duck work if the unit is ventde to the outside. To remove the unit requires two people, one to support the unit and the other to remove the bolts. If you are doing it alone, quite difficult, you'll have to juryrig a deadman support. Ther is a wall plate behind the unit that has a lip that the back bottom of the microwve is locked into. After the bolts are removed slowly lower the front until you are able free the unit from the lip of the support plate.

GE Microwave Profile Spacemaker Runs on its own

Your microwave turning on by itself is a "self preservation feature" of the GE Profile Advantium and maybe some other models. Read the manual, When your over the range oven gets warm enough, for whatever reason the venting fan comes on until a satisfactory oven temperature is reached. You are not permitted to shut the vent fan off. Also it seems a temperature near room temp must be achieved before it shuts the fan motor off, it is very annoying. We had to return our Advantium because of fan noise. I configured the ovens vent fan to the recirculate direction because we do not have a vent duct that exits the house over our range. When the vent fan acting as the ovens cooling fan automatically turned on we would have to leave the house to hear each other talk. Too bad we really liked the oven other than that major problem.
