Basically did you defrost all the ice and frost with a hair dryer and reassemble the unit? Things should run normally for a few days if you did so and then the ice will build up once again. You have one of those GE units with a electronic control board and what is known as an adaptive defrost system. It is difficult to diagnose without technical literature and knowledge of those units. In my experience the most common problems with those units is the defrost heater shorting out.
Also likely a defective defrost timer motor.

Does the compressor run? Or run intermittently? Are there any clicking sounds? Possibly the start relay is bad. It's a small box attached to the compressor. There should be 4 letters after the model number that you'll probably need to get the correct part.
I'd give these folks a call:

Refrigerator when it shuts down it makes a clunking sound,i have a tfx20ja.thank you.

Good day,
That is one or more centering springs that either weakened or broke inside the compressor itself.
Only a pro would be able to correct it by replacing the compressor. Very expensive.
However, these compressors can run a long time before they totally fail.

Cold at bottom only side by side fridge/freezer ice maker frozer over just before problem started

Sounds like a defrost problem. Look inside the freezer. Look and see if the back wall, behind the food is has ice or frost on it. If so you most likely have a defrost problem. With these models it is most likely bad defrost heaters. You can take the inside pannel out of the freezer, use a hair dryer and defrost (DO NOT USE SHARP OBJECT TO BREAK ICE) Put pannel back in and it will operate normaly for about 3 or 4 days. Until you can get the part or get it fixed. This way you will not loose you food.

GE Side By Side not cooling on refridgerator side.

Look on the back panel inside the freezer for ice beginning to show. Most times when this happens the fresh food section is the first to notice. Your refrigerator has a control board on the back. If not defrosting the air flow to the fresh food section is greatly reduced. Let me know, Sea Breeze

GE clean steel side by side not freezing ice. See

Unplug the fridge and pull away from wall. There is a panel on back that has a control board. Look on both sides for burn marks or loose welds. Also remove bottom paper panel on back and lets see if compressor is running. Let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

GE side by side with ice and water in door

This is a problem with my GE side by side also. It only happens occassionally and there doesn't seem to be any fix. I've had GE repair service here more than once. It seems that the insulation in the door is insufficient to keep the water line from freezing up. Small wonder GE is part of this awful financial mess.

  3. Remove the ice bin, shelves, and vertical partition.
