Question about HP Pavilion dv9000z Notebook

1 Answer

Does replacing the motherboard affect the files i had saved?

I have a hp dv9000 series notebook. when i press the power button, the blue lights come on but there is no display. using an external monitor, ic an see that it's trying to do a startup repair because windows won't start normally. after trying several times it still tells me they can't repair it and to report it. anyway, i searched online and apparently this is a common problem amongst pavillion owners - something about the motherboard being fried.

i was wondering if this** is what normally happens when there's something wrong with the motherboard? (**this as in the comp still sorta working/trying to repair or restore system, compared to the comp not responding at all/completely dead)

also, if i do get my motherbaord replaced/comp fixed, will i still have all the old files that i had saved previously?

Yes, but it involves board level component replacement....

Wear an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.

Or replace motherboard at a $100 on up.
(NOT including labor. Just price of motherboard)

Or it may be something as simple as the laptop is dirty inside, plus the Thermal Paste on the Processor has dried up; and Thermal Pad on graphics chipset has dried up. (Cannot be reused anyway)

Want the manual for sony vgn-n38e

Link to the Service Manual, Donald,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-sony

That Sony VAIO VGN-N38e, is part of the Sony VAIO VGN-N series of Notebook PC's.

Scroll down to the 8th line that begins with the blue -> VGN-A
Scroll across, and click on the blue -> VGN-N

PDF file. and the computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
May take up to 30 seconds after you click on the file name (VGN-N), before the first page comes up.
The file is downloading in the background.

That is the Service Manual. It doesn't have board level component replacement.

Is there a board level component that you feel needs replaced?
What are the symptoms of the laptop?

Power issues, if not the AC adapter, (Charger), or DC Power Jack; are related to the Power MOSFET's on the power circuit of the motherboard; and may also have bad MLCC's in that circuit.
(Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor)

[DC Power Jack is part of the circuit. Where it is attached look at those P.MOSFET's.
Example using HP Pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's,

http://mayohardware.blogspot.com/2010/04/important-parts-on-dv6000-and-dv9000.html

These series of HP's use the Fairchild Semiconductor International - FDS6679 - Power MOSFET, and the Alpha & Omega - AO4407 - P.MOSFET.

Looking at the second photo down, with the AO4407 circled in Yellow; look at the small rectangular object to the immediate right, that has a wide dark band on it.

There is one above it of the same size, and one above that one.
There is also one to the right of the top one.

These are MLCC's.

http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=FDS6679

Scroll down.

http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=AO4407

AO4407 has been phased out. List shows cross-references.

http://www.mouser.com/Passive-Components/Capacitors/Ceramic-Capacitors/Multilayer-Ceramic-Capacitors-MLCC-SMD-SMT/_/N-b2cj?P=1z0wrjcZ1z0x565

Just 4.7Mfd examples at 16 Volts.
Do not know the values of yours ]

Electrolytic Capacitor/s replacement?

OH, just cleaning the laptop out?
S'okay I was just letting you know board level replacement is possible.
(Does kinda' depend on your de-soldering/soldering skills, though)

This is very common for the HP dv9000 series laptops. The problem is the controller chip. You can either do a reflow or replace the motherboard.
check out the DIY guide from www.net2005.com if you wan't to try fixing it yourself. Or get your self an USB wireless card and problem solved.

Dv9000 fan comes on-I can hear the hard drive making noises clickyclicky. all blue lights across the top are on, but it won't boot up. Is this a mother board problem?

I would say its most likely a failing hard drive, as hard drives are not supposed to make a clicking noise. When they start making the clicking noise it usually due to the read/write heads coming into contact with the actual platter where data is stored. This will destroy your data. Usually happens pretty quickly once you start hearing the clicky, clicky. Are you getting to the bios screen when you press the power button to power on? Do you hear any beeps when you power on?

Hello, i have hp pavillion 4 laptop but when i power it the caps lock and num lock keys keeps blinking and the display screen is also blank.

This is a very common problem & it affects the Hp dv2000 , dv4000 , dv6000 , dv9000 series of laptops . In almost all cases this is caused by the video card overheating . There are 2 options , one is replace the motherboard ( expensive ) , the other is performing a " reflow " similar to how xbox 360's & ps3's are repaired . After the " reflow " you should replace the thermal paste with Arctic Silver #5 & I clean out the heatsink & fan before replacing them . Good Luck if you attempt the 2nd solution , I have done it about 20 times so far only 1 failure .

Won't power up. Blue power button flashes once and dies

I've fixed two dv9000 series laptops (including mine) that behaved like yours. Press the power button and the lights would briefly come on, then the thing would turn off. In both of them it happened with no battery installed and when using a good AC adapter, and a bad motherboard was the cause. I found replacements from a couple of different eBay sellers, at around $100 each. If you are comfortable working on this kind of equipment, you can change the board yourself. The HP site says the part number you need is 444002-001, but you can make sure by checking the sticker you'll find on the board underneath the memory modules. You can download the maintenance and service manual which details the disassembly and replacement steps.

My computer won't boot up

Is it not powering on or are you getting a blue screen? I know the dv9000 series had a problem with the motherboards, where the lights come on, but the computer doesn't. In that case, the computer will have to be sent back to HP.

Hp dv9000 will not start up. blue lights are go

you get a black screen right, nothing at all then no bios, no logo, nothing at all?
Do you get any beep codes and if so in what order?
did you try different ram?
First try to plug your laptop to an external monitor. If it works, you screen is bad, if it doesn't you probably need a new motherboard.

It booted up, no problem. The proceedure is to remove static electricity.
