Could be a defective backlight lamp in the new screen. I suggest you either return the new screen & buy another one, or swap the backlight lap in the new screen with the one from the old screen (which most probably is still good).

The monitor screen on your laptop is an LCD screen.

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
The additional light source is a Backlight.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

LCD screens are a composite of layers. The layers are held together by a metal frame, much like a picture frame.
The Backlight is usually located on one side, accessed after removing one side of the metal frame.

As stated, a Backlight is a very small type of Fluorescent lamp, (Tube)
Very fragile, easily breakable, and not usually approached by one who has very little, or no experience in replacing.
More common the entire LCD screen is replaced, which includes the Backlight already installed.

A laptop also needs an Inverter to provide power, both for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

90 percent of the time the fault is the Inverter.
I repeat, 90 percent of the time the fault is a bad Inverter.

An Inverter is cheaper than an LCD screen, and MUCH easier to replace than a Backlight.

Allow me to show you replacing an Inverter on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop.
Granted, it isn't an HP Compaq Presario V6500 series, but the principles still apply the same,

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/remove-replace-lcd-screen-inverter-hp-pavilion-dv6000-laptop/

I can also provide a free link, to the Service Manual for an HP Compaq Presario V6500 laptop, direct from HP Support,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3369429&

In the list click on;
Compaq Presario V6500, V6600, and V6700 Notebook PCs-Maintenance and Service Guide

This is a PDF file.
Allow up to 30 seconds to see the first page, and an additional time may be needed to fully download.

In the Bookmarks menu on the left click on the + sign next to;
1) Removal and replacement procedures
2) Component and replacement procedures
3) Display assembly

And/or go directly to Page 61 to view the Inverter location.

One example of an Inverter for an HP Compaq Presario V6500,

http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Compaq,Presario,V6500,Laptop,Inverters.aspx

Granted this is not what you asked for.
My premise is to teach, and hopefully save people money.

If you have additional questions please state in a Comment.

Trying ti fix a gate way fpd 1520 flat panal monitor i can see the image lightly but looks as if maby a bulb may be out any sugguestions on how to fix

LCD monitors use a fluorescent backlight system. A 15" probably needs just one. These are sandwiched on the perimeter of the monitor (usually under some tape that holds the lamp, reflector and other parts together. You need to order by length and width and get ones for your monitor size. Separate the panel from the bezel. Remove the tape, and separate the reflector (make a note of how things are put together) then you have to Dremel (or use another rotary tool) to remove the plastic to get the backlight out. (They are often molded into the frame.) Some backlights are sold without the wires. In that case, desolder the wires from the old backlight and solder them to the new one. Then put in the new backlight and reassemble everything. (http://www.lcdparts.net/howto/default.aspx) but for an overview: http://www.inventgeek.com/Projects/BacklightFix/overview.aspx Then push the new backlights into place, reconnect the wires and close up the sandwich of tape and other parts around the screen. Then replace it in the bezel.

Sometimes the inverter will fail but since you see the image that is likely not the case. However, you should consider testing the backlight with the inverter before installing it. (Unplug the old backlight (similar to a molex connector) (or desolder the wires from the old backlight and resolder them to the new one, depending on your backlight replacement), connect to the inverter and plug in. If it lights, you are good to go. Inverters can be tested with a high end multimeter (that can read frequency) or an oscilloscope. They cause an induced current which changes sign around the unit. Depending on the age of the inverter this can be 60 Hz or 50kHz. Hold the multimeter probes a fraction of an inch apart about an inch above the inverter. If a multimeter reads zero or near zero, the inverter is bad or the multimeter can't resolve the frequency. If you see a value or 1., then the inverter is good.)

I hope this helps.

No backlight - Sony DSC-H50

This is becasue the replacement part you purchased does not include the backlight. If you want the back light, you will have to remove it from your broken LCD (using a very low power soldering iron) and solder it on the new screen. Look at the new part and on the ribbon cable, there will be two metal like contacts. This is where you solder on the old backlight. You will also have to (carefully) remove the backlight housing from the old part and connect it to the new part. I got suckered just like you did, but I was able to make it work.

Display on but lamp not on

Hi, your LCD backlight has stopped working. This can either be repaired by HP, or you can replace the LCD assembly on the laptop. If you want to replace the LCD on the laptop yourself, you can find the replacement LCD online somewhere like eBay or an online parts reseller. Once you get the LCD, you can remove the old one and install the new one. It's only a few plastic panels, and about 8 screws and 1 wire.

Compaq Presario 915US Backlight Out

First, are you sure it's the backlight and not the "inverter" or the motherboard not turning on the "brite" signal ?
Any way, to fix the backlight, you have to remove the screen from the laptop (in most cases) and then open the screens plastic case. Then, there should be a little circuit board at the bottom of the screen;that's the inverter.Disconnect both wires from it (there should be wires on each side of it).Now remove the screws holding the screen in the plastic case and lift out the screen. At the bottom edge of the screen, you'll find a piece of silver / metallic tape. remove this tape CAREFULLY . Also on the bottom edge there are tiny ( I MEAN TINY) screws at each end of the screen.Remove these carefully lift the metal cover along the bottom of the screen and the backlight is underneath this cover.
