Will ubuntu work with hard drives that have advanced format ?

Advanced Format drives are supported by linux distributions running kernel 2.6.31 or higher, though for best results 2.6.34 is recommended.
Ubuntu has shipped with support for advanced format drives since Ubuntu 9.10, so if you are setting up a new system with the latest Ubuntu 11.04, you shouldn't experience any problems.
For more information, you may want to have a read of Western Digital's customer service article about support for advanced format drives in Linux;
You may also want to review the list of kernels included in various Ubuntu distributions in the wikipedia article at
If you are considering upgrading an existing system, you can find out what kernel you are running by enteringuname -rat the command prompt.

I need pointer to tool/software preferably recommended by Toshiba thru which I can check health of my Hard Disk - MK4021GAS.

I recommend going to and downloading the latest version of Ubuntu. Burn it to a CD or USB Drive, then boot off of it. Once you get into the Live mode (Try without installing), open Disk Utility, and you can run diagnostics on and check the health of your drives.

I installed ubuntu 9.04 version in toshiba satelite640 model in that inter net was not connecting to install my ubuntu files please suggest me to clear problem

Are you trying to connect wirelessly? or via ethernet? It is fully possible that your hardware does not have support with the version of Ubuntu you are using. I recommend getting the latest revision on a cd or dvd and installing from there.

Usually Ubuntu doesnt require any additional motherboard drivers if it has an open source version.

In Ubuntu 9.04, System> HARDWARE DRIVERS will show you all proprietary drivers in the system. You can ACTIVATE them there. Some files may be required to be downloaded from internet.

Image Editor

I would recommend -- in line with the free software ideas of Linux -- The GIMP.

It's an amazingly powerful image editor. It should be installed with the default Ubuntu but, if it's not, it can be downloaded here:

Ubuntu sound problem

Hi Josh

First of all check system setting.

It seems like your modules are not loaded, if you just installed, I recommend you to
re-install Ubuntu, if this is not the case, try to run -

sudo apt-get -f install

If everything fails, try this - sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start
