Check with Microsoft's XBox Live. Log in at https://login.live.com/ and review your units coverage and sign up to return the unit for service. Although our unit was beyond the standard 1 year warranty, the ring of death, and in our case the single lower right quadrant light due to the GPU failure, is covered past the warranty period. Unit was shipped to Mesquite TX on the 8th and returned today on the 19th, so turnaround is quick right now.
Be careful to check the charge/total at the bottom of the transaction page. Our total read $0. When we tried to save the browser page, only 1 of the available save formats saved a page that read $0. We checked and Microsoft did not charge our Xbox account credit card for the repair.
The return authorization included a prepaid UPS shipping label, and instructions for packing. We just boxed it up, slapped on the label, dropped it at UPS, and 11 days later UPS knocked on the door and handed us our unit, repaired.
At least some of the electronics are replaced, as the unit runs quieter (no loud fan noise) and cooler. Cudos to Microsoft for fixing this quickly and for no cost to us!

My First and foremost suggestion was that you shouldn't have opened the box yourself. By doing so you voided your warranty. Microsoft Extended the Warranties on ALL 360 units that suffer the 3 Red Rings of Death issue. You should have contacted Microsoft and let them fix it for you. Other than that, your 360 is Probably bricked.

Xbox 360 red ring of death

Not a simple question.

It depends on the 360 to be honest.

Whatever you do try do not do the "towel trick"
The red ring of death is usually an overheating problem and the towel trick will cause the 360 to overheat.
Look on youtube for "the penny trick/fix"

I'd recommend you send your xbox to a repair center though. In most cases they will repair it for free.

Xbox wil not start light turns green then turns to red

Hi you have got the dreaded red ring of death, this is very common with all xboxes and their are people out their that will fix them for you for a fee.

their is nothing you can do yourself to solve this problem as its a case of taking the xbox apart and removing the heat sinks and the x clamps and fitting new parts and new heat sink paste, this is a big job and requires special tools. so its not for the novice to do.

i do the repairs to these on a regular basis and 8 out of 10 i fix work again but others tend to be to far gone.

any way the reason you are getting this warning light is due to it over heating, check the date on the sticker on the back of the xbox as it is covered by warranty for 3 years for this exact fault so if its less than 3 years old go to the xbox website and get them to replace it for you, if its outside this time then you have 2 options you could either repair it or sell it.

you can buy repair kits and get the instructions off the net but without having done it before it can by really hard to do and you could do more harm than good.

when they built these they used cheap parts and cheap heat sink paste now over time this causes it to over heat and then you get the dreaded red ring of death and this shows you the either the gpu or cpu chip has over heated.

now the repair involves taking the xbox apart which is not easy but can be done you need to then remove the x clamps and then remove both heat sinks. once their removed you need to clean them up and remove all the old heat sink paste and use new paste, you also need to get xbox rrod repair kit as you wont be using the cheap x clamp bits anymore these will go in the bin as this is what caused the problem in the first place.

let me know what you would like to do or if you need further assistance ok

i also be damaged xbox's but im based in UK

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

When i try to turn my xbox on, the power button turns red with 3 out of the 4 quadrants, what is wrong with it?

Hi, you have got the red ring of death problem, if you google the following you will see exactly what im talking about:

how to fix rrod free guide

then hit search then that will list loads of sites that offer a guide on fixing this problem.

now the problem itself is to do with the fact that either the gpu chip or the cpu chip on the main circuit board has over heated, now if you have any warranty left i would take it back and get an exchange.

when microsoft made the xbox they used some cheap lead free solder and it is very brittle, and over time the solder cracks and you get the red ring of death, now their is an xclamp fix you can have done to solve the problem, but it wont be a long term fix, it may last a week it may last 3 or 4 months but in the end its going to fail again and be un-repairable,

i have done many xclamp fixes on 100s of xboxes and 8 out of 10 of the times it solves the problem and gets them working again, their is also a trick you can do using a towel but this is only a very short term fix, what you need to get done if you want it working again is get it taken apart and have the old heat sink paste removed and new paste put on the cpu and gpu chip then the heat sink needs replacing with the xclamp fix this will then get your xbox working.

i buy damaged xboxes all the time that have your problem and they are fixable but the fix may only work for a week or two so you need to bare this in mind if your going to have the work done, failing that you would need to get a new xbox.

let me know if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

I tried the towel trick and the penny heat sink. The console worked for 3 weeks then the red ring of death showed up again. Nothing I've tried will work. Any suggestions/

The towel trick and penny heat sink is a temporary fix for the Xbox 360. The red rings of death is a general hardware failure which means it needs a permanent fix. If your console is out of warranty it will be $99 through Microsoft, you check your local service centers for the system to be fixed and it might be cheaper.

Red ring of death error code 0102

Hi,

The red ring of death is a generic error code due to the design of the xbox. Microsoft has offered an extended three year warranty to anyone who is afflicted by the red ring of death. Try calling them at 1-800-4MY-XBOX with your consoles serial number, and they will start the replacement process to repair your console.
