I have a maytag (quiet series 400) top load washer and it just started making a humming sound when it starts the wash cycle and when it starts the spin cycle. what causes this and how can it be fixed? The washer is only 2 1/2 years old.
it's the motor that makes the humming sound..it may have difficulty in starting..when starting like this the motor draws more current and this may cause the windings to burn out..try reducing the load..if the sound disappears then indeed the capacity of the motor is deteriorating...take out motor and clean bushing and lubricate.. also realign belt ..

My Maytag washer is almost 20 years old. I have never had to have it repaired, and I take good care of it. The knob to start the cycle will not work on any of the cycles except the delicate cycle, and only then the cycle stops midway and won't finish the cylce unless I try to start the cycle again. I have to keep pushing the knob up and down to "catch" and finish the cycle. This doesn't always work either. I am lucky if I can get through a load of wash. The washer otherwise still seems to work except for this. I am thinking there is a problem with a switch in the cycle knob. I don't know whether I can fix this myself until I can buy a new washer or if it is worth it to call a repair person. Thank you for anything you can suggest.

Washing Machine, (22 year old, top load, heavy duty, two speed Maytag), will go through its entire cycle; but during each spin cycle, the water fails to ebb the tub.
