Your best bet is to put in 3 quarts then see if there is anything showing on the dipstick if not add another quart at a time until you see something or it's at the fill level on the dipstick. when I do this I leave the dipstick either out completely or half out so oil doesn't splash up on it while pouring in that was I don't have to wipe it each time. typically from the bottom of the dipstick to the max fill line is one to 1.5 quarts, so don't worry about overfilling if you are checking between each quart. And if you buy 5 quarts and you have an extra, just save it for the next oil change.
