Sounds like your engine temp sensor is bad. check wiring for cuts or loose connection.

Bike runs good until it gets hot


Hey Travis,
From experience.. this sounds like a ignition coil going bad... you can get them tested at any GOOD motorcycle dealership.. We used to test for the other shops in town,,(Yamaha has/had something called an "electrotester" that will measure spark travel and put a load on the coil...we would wrap the coil in rags to get them hot when we tested them) If its bad, it will show up

2001 sunfire start good cold but not when engine is hot


It sounds like you have a "flooding" problem, where you are getting too much fuel on the warm start. It takes more fuel to start a cold engine than a warm one. By holding the pedal the pedal to the floor, you are telling the computer to do a "clear flood" operation, and that lets you start the car. The culprit is probably the Coolant Temperature Sensor. If this is faulty, it will tell the computer that that the coolant (thus the engine) is much cooler than it really is. This results in the engine flooding when warm. It may also run rough at idle after warm start since it is still getting too much fuel. You will also notice a massive loss of fuel economy. Replace the coolant temperature sensor.

2000 malibu runs hot if not warmed up


How do you know it gets hot? Are you going by the temperature gauge on the dash? Or have you checked under the hood and found out the engine really is running hot? ...Reason I ask is, something just doesn't sound right in your description. After just 5 minutes from starting and driving away, the engine would not yet be at normal operating temperature. That would explain the heater not yet warm. But the temp. gauge says hot?
If so, I would replace the temperature sending unit on the engine. the one for the dash gauge, and see if that was the problem-not reading the temp. accurately.
Couple of other things: Are you sure you got all the air out of the coolant system? Start the car with the radiator cap off and let it run until the engine is warmed up fully, then shut it off and install the cap. Does your reservoir tank stay about half full where it should be, between the full-hot and full-cold marks?
If your problem persists. I would have the coolant system pressure tested, and see if you could get a true temperature reading of the coolant when it seems to be running hot.

Line trimmer starts and runs well until it gets hot. As soon as throttle let off dies and won't restart until cools down. Less than one year old.


If you are mixing your gas and oil than make sure the ratio is correct, to much fuel and you will run hot, to much oil and you will smoke a lot. Also check spark plug gap that could make machine run hotter than it should be. Make sure engine cooling fins are free of dirt and debris. If it's really less than one year old and if problem persists and you still have heat issue take it back to where you purchased and have them check it out or give you a replacement, a new machine should not run in this manner could be a lemon, it happens. 1998 GMC Savana 3500 5.7L. Truck starts ok when cold. After running, very difficult to start have to pump the pedal and hold to the floor. Fuel pressure jumps to 62psi when pump runs, drops to 58 and holds...

2005 YZ250F. Runs good with choke pulled out even after it is warm. as soon as I ush the choke in it backfires won't run. I used nto have the same symptom on an earlier model and it was always the hot...


first of all, after the bike starts release the choke, you dont want leave the choke on until it gets warm, because it makes it a really rich mix, and it will eat the oil off the cylinder wall and you can burn the rings and cylinder wall. try this. at the bottom of the carb is a fuel screw(small standard flat head screw) turn it all the way closed, then back it out 2 full turns, that should give you proper mix, right now your running way to lean, thats why its working with the choke in. has anything been done to the bike? new after market exaust? if so it could be a jetting issue. and you are correct about the hot start.....there is a little rubber gromet on the barrel of the hot start plunger where it goes into the carb, that washer could be bad, or the black plastic boot that attatches the hot start to the carb could be bad and is allowing air to be sucked in...but i would reset the fuel screw on it first....hope this help. if not, repost and we will get ya figured out. p.s. nice bike.

If its a petrol motor then they will blow a little white smoke/steam on startup until the exhaust heats up. The engines computer knows that its cold so richens the petrol/air mixture to warm it up faster . You should let it warm a little before driving off or if you can't then don't rev it hard til it starts to warm up. All the parts inside the engine need to get to optimal running temp to wear properly. Most engines wear more on startup then when they have been running for a long time. In regards to smoke blue is bad (oil) black is bad ( to much fuel) and white is usually on startup.

seem like you got the same problem as my scion xa, check the fuel pressure regulater. bad regulater some time smell like leak gas. auto zone might cause you about $80.00.

Intermitant temperature


Check to make sure your thermostat works right by monitoring the warming up of your engine. With a completely cold engine, start and run the engine for a few minutes, then put your hand on the top radiator hose to monitor if and when it gets warm as the thermostat opens more and more and note the gauge reading( if it works) the top radiator hose should be unbearably hot within 5-8 minutes. If the therm. opens right it should close right aswell, staying open a little while eventhough the radiator may have cooled may be what you are experiencing causing the rapid cooling and is nothing to worry about. The Hose should not get warm very soon after starting the engine. Regarding you gauge, lets take one step at a time, verify proper op. or the therm.
