It could be the reason of heavy software installed in your cell phone. Either delete some unnecessary software or install a software called "Memory UP". the 3g is the biggest battery killer on your phone. in the android market you can download an app called 3G on/off turn the 3G off when you are not using the internet. keeping an eye on this can keep your phone going for almost another day. as the phone will use 21% of its battery just sitting there as you sleep.
The slow uploading and downloading could be down to your network.
I use an app called Autosettings which turns off features of the handset during set time ie. while i sleep and while the battery is low.
