The method will depend on your make & model machine, although the vintage sewing machine buttonhole method will work on all zig-zag machines (just requires manually measuring and adjusting the stitch length & width during the process):

try adjusting the size, see if it changes the result and go from there, you might also want to ask other experts, sewing machines are not my speciality.

My automatic buttonhole stitch is not working on my elna sewing machine ,even when the lever is pulled down

you should a buttonhole button that must be pushed on the machine
either before you pull the buttonhole lever down or after to let the
sewing machine know what function to use, my sewing machine
won't let me make a buttonhole unless I push the buttonhole button
or yes, like you said the buttonhole foot could be damaged.

Pfaff 2170 will not make consistently sized buttonholes

Go to the following site regarding timing your machine. Are you placing a button in the buttonhole foot so the machine "knows" how long to make the buttonhole? If you have a button stop lever to the left of your needle bar, are you pulling it down and putting it in FRONT of the button stop so it can complete the rotation?

I have temporarily misplaced the instruction manual to my White 979 sewing machine. I need to put this shirt in todays mail and I have forgotten the direction to make a buttonhole. I s there a place I...

Automatic BUTTONHOLE making with 979:
  1. Carefully mark the position of buttonhole on your garment.
  2. Slide the button carrier and insert the button.
  3. Attach the buttonhole foot.
  4. Place the garment under the foot so that the needle pierces the fabric at the beginning of buttonhole.
  5. Lower the buttonhole lever and the presser foot lever.
  6. Push the buttonhole lever away from you.
  7. Start machine to complete entire buttonhole.
NOTE:
  • While making buttonholes, maintain an even sewing speed for uniform buttonholes.
  • When buttonholes are completed, be sure to push up the buttonhole lever as gar as it can go.

Not sure how to use the buttonhole foot J that came with my 712T machine. I guess I don't understand the sliding part. Are you suppose to guess at the buttonhole size or do you use the button somehow to...

The buttonhole foot slides open so that you may insert the button which you are making a button hole for so that it may be sized correctly.

Slide open the foot, place the buttin on the spot and slide it closed.

Turn the pattern selector off and back on to the buttonhole pattern to reset. (Do this each time you make a buttonhole to reset)

Pull down the buttonhole lever located up and to the left of the needle bar. Pull it ALL THE WAY DOWN so that it will be tripped by the buttonhole foot as it moves.

Set the stitch width to about 4 or 4.5.

Set the stitch length to a very tight stitch (but usually slightly higher than the recommended marking)

Set the upper tension on 3.

Use an appropriate stabilizer. This is the key to a good buttonhole.

Lower the foot on the fabric, ensuring that the foot goes down without springing forward or back.

Make a few practice buttonholes, adjusting the width and length untill you get what you are looking for.

How do i use the automatic buttonhole on kenmore 19233??

Your machine should have a special buttonhole foot which has a place to insert a button, You will probably have to pull on opposite ends of the foot to open it. Place the button in the foot and then squeeze it together to make the button secure. Attach the foot to the machine. It should snap on.
looking at the left side of the machine you will see your needle bar at the front and the presser foot bar at the back. You should also see another lever which needs to be pulled down so that it rests in the buttonhole foot.Select buttonhole on your machine and it should sew. The button determines how long the buttonhole is.

Machine made buttonholes.

Here ya go! For 1 Step Automatic Buttonholes: 1. Place button into the buttonhole attachment. 2. Push slider to hold button securely in the slot. The button goes to the back! 3. Put button foot onto needle bar--just attach it securely. 4. Place needle thread and bobbin thread UNDER buttonhole attachment and let 4"-5" of thread trail behind it. 5. There's a lever called a Button Stop to the left of the needle bar. Give it a gentle tug and pull it down. Pull forward. Hear a click? Now the machine knows what length to STOP sewing! 6. Put foot on pedal and machine will sew barrack closest to you first. It will continue all around until it makes complete rotation of each side. 7. You must do these steps for each of your buttonholes! IMPORTANT: Make sure you set your dial for making buttonhole pattern because that "tells" machine to zig zag, and use appropriate size needle for the particular weight of your fabric. A new needle before you begin is recommended. Turn screw on needlebar to loosen screw. Hold it so it does not slip down into the feed dog area! New needle is inserted flat shank toward back of needlebar as far as it will go. Tighten screw. Did this help? Hope so!
