SOURCE: Hydrostatic mower goes in reverse but not forward. Only 73 hrs on it!

On my hydrostatic there is an adjustment on the forward/back lever which can be made to run all reverse or all forward. Normal setting gives both of course. Look at that adjustment. Maybe something let go.

SOURCE: MTD PRO RIDING MOWER/LAWN TRACTOR 18 HP ENGINE HYDROSTATIC DRIVE

In the back of the mower...probably under the seat, there should be a lever to release the transmission, or it is on the back plate. As far as the noise when trying to move drive the mower, the brake in the back, next to the transmission is jammed, use a 1/2 inch wrench to loosen it maybe 1/4 turn and this should unlock the brakes

SOURCE: I have a Countax K14 ride on mower the cutter deck

Hello ianh_2007:

Usually this Problem is Caused by a Blown Fuse or a Bad PTO Ground.
1-The Following is a Basic File I Made for Checking the PTO (Blade Engagement).
>>The Most Common Cause for this Problem is the PTO Ground. >>A Quick Ground Check is to Use Another Wire and Ground the PTO at the Harness Connection Nearest the PTO.
>>Be Careful and Do Not Ground the HOT Wire. Use a Multimeter and Locate the Ground Wire.
>>Clean the PTO Ground and All the Connections for the PTO Wiring Harness.
>>If you have an Ohmmeter, Disconnect the Wiring Harness from the Front of the Clutch and Check the Resistance of the Clutch. You should have around 4 or 5 OHMs. If at or near Zero, the Coil has Shorted.
2- >>The Following is a Basic File I made for Setting the PTO Clearance. Any Input is Appreciated. **Some of the Newer PTOs cannot be Adjusted.
>>If you can Get a Blade Style Feeler Gauge between the PTO Magnet and Clutch, then Set the Clearance at .015in. The Newer PTOs have the Same Set Up as the Older PTOs, except there is No Adjustments.
>>I Suggest also that you Rig a 12 Volt Light for Testing the Current Flow to the PTO while Operating the Mower. If the Light Blinks During Operation, then you have a Bad Connection somewhere to the PTO Clutch.
>>If the Light Stays Steady and the PTO Still Kicks in and Out, then it is the Adjustment.
>>You can Also Try Turning the Spring Loaded Adjuster Nuts 1/4 Turn and Operate the Mower. Do Not Adjust Over 1/2 Turn.
>>If you have Adjusted to 1/2 Turn and the Problem is Still Present and you Know the Voltage to the PTO is Steady, then Replace the PTO.**
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

Respectfully

My Husqvarna hyrdrostatic transmission is sealed, and yours may very well be also. That means no changing the fluid.

My John Deere rinding lawn mower won't go forword or backwards

John Deere mowers, for the most part, use hydrostatic transmissions. These use an oil of some type (they vary by model) in the transaxle to provide hydraulic pressure to move the tractor. Older tractors will eventually experience some oil leakage over time due to seal wear. If the level gets too low, then you fail to move. Check the oil level in the transaxle. The location of the reservoir varies from model to model. If it is low, after determining the correct oil to use, fill to proper level. Then, start the tractor and work the hydrostatic drive lever forward and backward slowly and continuously until you get full speed operations in both forward and reverse. This can take a few minutes until all the air has been purged from the system.

What is happening when the mower won't move forward or backwards when it's running

Adjustment on the transaxle rod or the rod has come off at the transaxle are your most likely causes. Or the lever that disengages the transaxle in the back has been pulled out. If that's the case, simply push it back in.

How can i drain the oil from transmission on my countax C600H

The Countax is a mower, not a bike, hence the confused answers above. The Tuff Torq transmission on these are not good, and as you have found a sealed unit. I had the same issue, you can remove it from the mower chassis, take out the breather and flip it over to get some oil out but most of it stays in and this is unlikely to cure the problem. Frankly they are a bit rubbish. You can try refurbishing it completely, there are some good "how to's" on youtube. I bought a "referb" trans, that pulls ok for now but it sounds awful, I doubt it will last. It is probably quicker and easier and in the long run cheaper to buy a complete new trans unit, at 750 or buy a complete new mower. Sorry, but although they hold their money these are residential grade machines and you should not expect more than 10 years light use out of them. Towing or snow ploughing will ruin what is regarded as a fairly lightweight trans. I'm looking at getting a ZTR mower now as they are supposed to be much faster, simpler and have a more commercial specification. I'm pretty disappointed with the engineering on the Countax or Westwood machines, they cut well when perfect but are definitely fragile.

What's going on when the mower won't go forward or backward

It could be a couple of things. The drive belt from the engine to the transaxle could have slipped or may have broken. If it is a hydrostatic transaxle someone may have pushed it by hand and to do that you have to disengage the transaxle from the back panel of the frame. The lever should not be pulled out and hooked if you want to drive it anywhere. Also make sure the pulley on the transaxle is not out of place or slipping.

If this is really helpful, please rate.

I have a Craftsman mower 917.280810.It barely moves when clutch is released, even on flat ground.I changed the belt-no help. The transaxle pulley is engaged, and when I put my hand on the tire, the tire stops...

I don't quite get you, if the belt is running but the rear axle is not turning then your transmission is shot. If the belt is running and the rear axle is spinning with no forward or backward motion, then someone took the back wheels off and put them back on without installing the keyways.

Our 20 hp 46" cut Husqvarna '08 riding mower will crank just fine but will not move forward or backward.

Check to make sure the belt that runs from the engine pulley back to the transaxle is on all the pulleys. If it is a hydrostatic transaxle make sure the free wheel control lever at the back of the tractor is in correct position, or the brake plate may be stuck on but that would make a loud grinding sound. If it is a gear drive make sure the transaxle pulley is turning and make sure you didn't lose a rear wheel key from the axle,(if you had the tire off for a repair it is easy to lose the key when you go to put the tire back on.
