At random times, my computer makes a rhythmic clicking noise. During the event the screen freezes up, and sometimes it stays locked up. At other times it functions just fine. What is the noise and is it dangerous?

A methodical rhythmic clicking sound could be coming from the hard drive as it is having trouble reading a particular sector.

I would highly recommend that you backup your data and replace the hard drive.

How, if possible, open up the side of the computer and when the clicking starts, lay your palm/fingers on the side of the hard drive to see if you can "feel" the clicking to either confirm or not that the noise is coming from the hard drive.

Good luck
God Bless

Shuts down after start up

Computer does not boot up The problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needs reseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. Just like you sometimes need a mechanic to repair your car, sometimes you do need a technician to diagnose and identify the fault or faults on your computer. Not only does a good service technican have the experience to deal with this type of problem, they also have the equipment that allows them to look at things the average computer user can't see, and he has a collection of replacement parts that can be used to quickly test individual components on your computer.

IMAC SCREEN FREEZES OR GOES BLACK.

same thing happens to me - most of the time it will just randomly freeze; occasionally i get an unresponsive black screen. this 24' aluminum imac usually has startup problems also - sometimes it will "gong" and nothing else; sometimes the apple logo will come up and then nothing else; sometimes it will load the logo and then spin for a few seconds and then freeze - the only option is to manually shut down. there is no rhyme or reason to it

This is a problem with the gpu (graphics chip) the console will need stripping down and new thermal paste applied or the motherboard needs re-balling. sorry but there is no real quick fix for this.
Hope this helps.

Screen glitches and freezes. also RROD

RROD red ring of death -= over heating, if your mech minded, you can buy fix kits which work 95% of the time from trade me or ebay for about 50 NZD that allow the heat transfer to stop, also while your there upgrade your cooling system, very easy, computer fix shops can do it for about the same price. or just open cased with a wired in 5 dollar fan can even do the trick. but dont try the towel method, will wreak it for good

Weird clicking noise and computer freezes.

Laptops have very few moving parts. Your problem is more than likely either a fan or your hard drive. Remove the hard drive, start the computer up and just let it run for awhile. If the clicking noise never comes up then thats your problem. If it does, its probably a fan.

Disregard anything on the screen itself, just let the PC run. It sounds like after the hard drive has been spinning for a minute a motor starts to die.
