Clean waterrower tank

How did you get on with this?
I recently came back from a long holiday to find that I had a living water tank ( I normally have a curtain covering it, but it hadn't been covered properly ( or even at all).

In my case the growth looked like feathers in the tank...the rest of the water was clear.
The process I used was:
1: fully drain.
2: Flush
3: repeat until it is clean.
4: add a chlorine tab and schedule reminders on your phone.
To fully drain:
I siphoned the dirty water out using a Wilko home brew siphoning kit ( about £3) and the siphon pump that comes with the rower.
Specifically, I plugged the plastic pipe (hard) into the flexible tube by at least an inch, and CAREFULLY slide the pipe into the waterrower tank ( carefully: if the pipe comes out inside the tank, there is no getting it out).
Then I wrapped some clingfilm around the open end of the plastic tube ( to make a seal), and shoved that into the feed ( straight) leg of the siphon pump. It doesnt have to look pretty, just get a seal and be easy to remove. I could have used duck tape to make the seal, etc. Then check that the screw at the top of the siphon pump is closed, and the squeeze the bulb at the top of the pump to pull all of the water out of the tank and into a suitably sized container. I used a bucket, but you might need to use something lower, like a gardeners gravel tray, or lots of washing up bowls... depends where you keep your rower. Just have the storage ready.

The most efficient way of doing siphoning is to pump the dirty water into until it is over the height of the top of the hose, then smoothly remove the siphon pump leg, leaving just the hose to drain the dirty water into your bucket.
Back at the tank end, twist the tube so that you point the plastic pipe into the closest bottom edge of the tank, then use books to angle the tank so that it is the lowest part of the tank... gunk should fall into that corner, and your siphoning should then drain the most gunk out. I agitated the tank a little, to make sure I was getting the most muck out, it seemed to work quite well.
2: Flushing the tank.
Once the tank was as empty as I could get it, I used a fresh bucket of fresh water and filled the water rower tank - no need to remove the plastic pipe/tube arrangement from the tank at this point. Once it has at least 10 litres in the tank, you can carefully remove the pipe/ tube from the tank and spin the rower mechanism for a while: we're trying to agitate fresh water over the inside surfaces, to get the gunk into the water, rather than the surfaces. I found that it helps to stand the machine up, and carefully spin the mechanism a couple of times: it puts water over the upper surface of the tank.
Then it is back in with the tube/ pipe arrangement and drain as previously.
Then flush again with fresh water, then drain again.
At this point, my machine was clean enough to refill, add a chlorine tab ( free from the nice people at Waterrower) and job done.
The best advice.
Prevention really is better than cure: I recommend you use your phone to calendar a reminder to put a tab in every month/6 weeks or so during the summer, and every 2 months or so in winter ( UK, other countries sunlight/ temp may vary). In that way, you will never have to mess about with the siphoning kit again....

Hope it worked out for you!

My waterrower has a leaking seam in the plastic tank. I know its not that expensive to get it fixed, but its a big hassle...80 mile round trip in heavy traffic. Is it ok to use plastic sealant like you use...

I sealed my tank seal permanently and also fixed cracks on the bottom with Loctite PL Marine Fast Cure Adhesive Sealant. On the inside when the tank was apart I glued a heavy plastic patch directly over the cracks in the bottom. I made the patch from a flat section of plastic cut from an old refrigerator crisper drawer. After installation with the tank laying flat and level glue the upper side of the tank to the adjacent wood for stability. Wait a few days before filling. Photos are attached. The drum on the waterrower is leaking. WHat is the best way to fix it?

Good afternoon, Arne725:

I hope this message finds you well.

You can find clear silicone sealer here:

http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-80050-Clear-Silicone--3-Ounce/dp/B0002UEPVI/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1308017776&sr=1-1

and if you are feeling artistic, some pinstriping will nicely accent the tank.

The paddle is touching the inside of the water **** and making a rubbing sound, help!!

I bet itts rubbing on the tank side closest to the seat right ? same thing happenned to me, also on Ash Wood

WaterRower suggests putting splints/shims... under the front end of the tank to gently lift it up a bit.
This sort of helps, but wasnt a long term solution.... didnt work too well.
still trying to figure out what to do

Hey, I just called customer service (800-852-2210). The rep said to make sure that the smaller disk (on top of big spool) is flush with the underside of the top board. In my case it wasn't catching the metal cylinder which sends data to the monitor. Quick fix with a screwdriver or butter knife! Good luck.

Here is a little guide for setting up dual monitors with fedora core 6: http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/how-to-setup-dual-monitors-on-linux-fedora-core/

I haven't had to use duals monitors with Linux yet but if this doesn't work let me know and I'll run some tests as I can easily set this up at work (we use the same computers and similar cards).
