no their is a spark or should be it is completely inclosed so i cant get into it. their is the pilot button and an ignition button.

  • stindall Jun 20, 2009

i am pushing the ignition all the way til it clicks, and their is a small hole that you can see into the heater to see the flame but the hole is also sealed with a glass cover so you cant stick anything into it.

To get it to ignite the gas valve should open and the electronic ignition should spark across the front of the the small jet of gas coming out of the pilot jet

If you cannot see a spark one of two things has happened

(1) The electronic spark generator has died

(2) The tip of the electrode has either broken off or has become so dirty it cannot complete the arc

Either way the only way it can be sorted is to strip it down and check out the ignition circuit

The comment from the previous helper re a long match is not a bad idea provided you realise that you must hold down the ignition button at the same time and in some cases hold it down until the thermocouple has warmed up enough to haold the valve open.

Is there a spark? or do you need a long match? The button usually just opens the pilot so it can be lit. If its not electronic.

You should be able to hear the spark like on a gas stove or bbQ. From what you say, it is the ignitir. And you say there is no access, hmmmmmm, they had to get all that stuff in there somehow.no peep hole you can slide a long match of bbq litter into? Are you pushing the ignitor button down all the way until it snaps? Just holding it down won't do it. You have to make it snap. That makrs the spark.

I know your finger must really be sore by now. It seems you have tried it in every possible way. But, I'm going to ask one more question.....never mind, I think we will just have to admit defeat. The ignitor wins by fault. I'm sorry. You tried. co7196@yahoo,com if you come up with an idea e-mail me.

Have a richmond 6G40-36F1 hot water heater had to turn off gas for another issue, now igniter doesnt spark and pilot wont light

Not to sound silly, but are you pushing the igniter button down hard enough so it snaps? If so, your igniter is no good. Try to light the water heater the old fashioned way by using a match. I would use fireplace matches since they are long enough to reach the pilot light point.

Finally found the reset button on my Whirlpool hot water tank, but it will not budge when I push it. Why? Pilot will not light.

Reset button on gas water heater??
Usually there is not a reset button on gas water heater, which might explain why is doesn't move:

Do you mean the igniter button for lighting pilot?? The piezo igniter can go bad.

Could be bad regulator valve. Make sure you follow the lighting directions to the TEE. But if it will not light at all in pilot mode, its most likelt a the regulator valve.

I would suggest that you remove pilot assembly from gas valve and burner and clean pilot orifice and see if that helps. Be careful when cleaning hole in the orifice so you don't enlarge the hole. Good luck and thank you.
