Its the setting issue and it needs resetting.
--------------------------
every time you lose power, you have to reset a dozen clocks around the house which is a real pain since we lose power frequently. But with the battery backup in this unit, it never misses a beat and keeps all its programming so everything works perfectly when power is restored

As mentioned in the overview, the flip down door that accesses the control panel also acts as a manual override switch. So you just press it (it has good tactical feel so you know you pressed it) to turn the lights on or off. Very handy if you want to turn on the light or appliance manually or to test that everything's working.

The initial setting instructions can be a bit confusing. The small buttons and small display screen can add to the frustration. I would suggest downloading the instructions here and following them to a "t". Go to http://www.intermatic.com and follow the Product - Timer links to Indoor - In Wall timers and click on the link to Easy Set Guide.

this will help you.
thanks.

Self adjusting in wall timer

Timer is not known.
Copy following links to identify timer and download manual
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-timers-and-manuals.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html
In the manual, you will see directions for resetting timer.

If resetting does not work, then review timer programming carefully to make sure there are no conflicts in the programming such as overlapping days, or inconsistent am-pm, etc

I do not have an instruction manual for the Intermatic E1400WC timer switch and I can't figure out how to program the on/off times.

Intermatic makes heavy duty Ei400 series 1HP 120V or 240V countdown timer that can be wired for single-pole and 3-way.
Open following link to identify Ei400 timer and download manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Countdown-timer-horsepower-ratings.html#Ei

Coundownt timers are used to control fans and lights that need to run certain length of time, and then turn off. For example bathroom fan or whole house attic fan

The problem could be the Load and not the timer.

I discovered that if there is a problem on the circuit, that these electronic timers can malfunction.
Buy circuit analyzer from home center, test nearby receptacle that is on same circuit.
If there is a ground fault, for example in your light-fan-motor, you have to track this down with multimeter or some other testing device.

If the circuit is clean, and your electronic device has malfunctioned, then bad news: There are no repairs for in-wall electronic devices.

I test timers: 4-6% arrive defective. Many go bad first year or two. Some last quite a while.
Some programmable timers can be reset and the timer recovers.

Intermatic page below shows countdown timers.

Sample manual shows 1 year limited warranty for your product:

If I can make a replacement suggestion:
Manual spring-wound countdown timer lasts for 10 years because it has no electronic parts.
I have three of these and they work without a problem even on circuits that have small ground faults.

I am installing a intilitech 7 day in wall timer replacing an old mechanical 12 hr timer. The load is a 1/4hp 2 speed attic fan. The original wiring had hot in hot out of the timer. This has hot in, hot...

Utilitec does not make a 2 speed timer.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Program-wire-Utilitech-LW60419.html

1) One possible option is a timer with NO and NC terminals like Intermatic-Grasslin FM1 series rated 1 HP. This example timer would have the motor running continually on either one speed or the other.
http://www.intermatic.com/~/media/files/intermatic/products/instructions/grasslin/fm1%20series%20time%20switches.ashx

2) Inside a 2-speed motor are two separate windings.
Windings are loops of copper wire that cause the fan motor to rotate.
For 2-speed, each winding has to be connected to a different 'switch.'
For example, like a ceiling fan. You pull the chain once, and electricity flows to one winding. Pull the chain again, and the switch sends electricity to another winding.

3) The following wiring diagram shows ordinary on-off timer connected to 2-speed switch: This is the basic plan for Broan Nutone 2-speed switch timer, which might be the product you are replacing
http://blog.airscapefans.com/wp-content/uploads//timer_option1_1-1024x768.jpg

4) Nutone makes a 2-speed whole house fan timer.
http://www.nutone.com/PDF/InstallGuides/CFS2WHins89777.pdf

5) And open following Broan Nutone manual that show the two spped timer wiring

Is the GFCI frying my intermatic timer?

First off is the black wire feeding the gfci going to the brass colored screw? If so make sure the black wire coming out of the timer is attached to the brass screw on the gfci and the white colored wire is attached to the silver screw. If these are all connected properly it is possible that the fan isn't wired properly.
