Is there a disc that can fix a Dell 0147 optical error?
There is a slight possibility that a cleaning disc might work. They are basically a CD with mini brushes on them to clean the lens of the laser that reads the information from the disc. There is a chance that the drive's motor's or electronics on the inside have gone bad as well. I would say that the best way to tell the difference between the two situations, is to judge how much the disc drive has been used.
f you haven't used the drive in over six months, then the lens might need to be swept free of dust. On the other hand if you use the drive often for tasks like data backup, watching DVD's, or playing games that require a disc be inserted; then you probably have a disc drive that has failed and needs to be replaced. Some Dell's like the D630 that I have make replacing the disc drive really simple, but other models take more patience. Generally a replacement disc drive for a laptop is only 50-75$ at an on-line auction site like E bay.
There is a slight possibility that replacing the firmware for the disc drive could fix the problem. I would recommend Leaving any firmware upgrades to professionals, or tech. savvy friends. Firmware updates can break a drive completely. For example if the wrong drive manufacturer or model was updated, it could potentially brick your disc drive. By the way brick is a tech. term meaning to break beyoned repair rendering it completely useless.
the cheapest thing to do is get a CD cleaning kit. You might even be able to find one at the dollar store. Please don't be disappointed if this does not work. That means that the next logical step would be either replacing the internal disc drive, or buying an external disc drive.
