How do i transfer data from windows 98 formatted drives 2 xp ones

My old gateway destination computer wont boot up for some reason. every time it almost boots it tells me i have a disc protection error and must restart. so after numerous attempts i decided to pull the drives out and put them in my new comp running xp so i can copy the data.
The new computer runs windows xp home edition and has three drives one a system disk off 232 gigs and two more in raid array with 223 gigs that show as a single drive. i had an ide cable and two power conections so i attached my two old drives to the comp and booted it up. the found new hardware wizard found both the new drives but when i open my computer icon it doesnt show the new drives. i have a the Paragon disk wiper profesional version 8.5 and it can see all the drives but it shows the two new ones as unformatted. i know they are formatted as they were working up untill i couldnt boot the comp consitently. how can i get my computer to see them so i can pull the data off of them?

YES BUT FIRST YOU HAVE TO WIPE THE HARD DRIVE. YOU CANNOT "DOWNGRADE" FROM 7 TO XP...ONLY UPGRADE.

BACK UP ALL DATA FIRST

Remove old drive from computer and install in new computer using ide ribbon. It will connect as a secondary unit and you can then using windows explorer transfer any data on old drive to new one.

Win98 hds in win xp dont show other program says not formatted

you will need to revert back to the master/slave setting.  As slave/slave neither disk will be the main controller. Try reverse the master disk to the slave, and the slave to master, as it may be that the controller has a fault which is why you were having the original win98 problem.  Let me know how you get on

Trying 2 trsnfr data off win98 drives to xp drives dont show up

well first of all it would more than likely be a raw data file format for the older 2 drives.

if u are currently running xp with ntfs and know tht the 2 old drives were a fat32 mft then i would recommend using getdataback for fat.

this is the site's info on it
http://www.runtime.org/diskexplorer.htm#DE_FAT

using this link to d/l the program trial
http://www.runtime.org/gdb.zip

it will allow you to d/l the program and to also view the contents of the drive. if you know of a way to get the full version of this software then you could take all of the files from the old hd's and paste them to the newer hd just in case you could not recover the files by normal means. i have recovered roughly 10 hd's that could not be seen normally through the disk manager in xp.

also another tips to try is go to the my computer right click and go to manage. try to see if the volume (name) is not mounted. but it the type or format of the hd says raw then your best to use the getdataback program.

easy to follow instructions on how to use the program. is about 4mb in size.

Formating hard disk

IF the old PC motherboard will recognize the drive while booting up, Windows 98 will also see the drive after boot-up. You may have to reformat the drive into smaller partitions.

All you have to do is physically install the drive in your old computer and attempt to boot. After the computer boots up, if the drive does not show up shut down and put the drive back in your old computer. Use the manufacturer's partitioning software available on their website to change the drive from one 250 Gb partitions to five 50 Gb partitions.

I have /had Windows 98 on my computer and a friend installed windows xp. I tried to get rid of Xp but lost Win 98, I have the original RestoreDisk for my compaq but it will not let me install to get back...

Have you tried booting the system with the restore disk, well it should reformat the system before it installs a fresh copy of windows 98 so you should back-up data before proceeding and check the boot sequence in your bios, set the first boot device to CD/DVD.

I hope this helps:)
