X + y = 84

x = 4y + 9

so 4y + 9 +y = 84

5y = 75

y = 15

x = 60 + 9 = 69

Check

69 + 15 = 84

SOURCE: gr 8 question

The two numbers are 9 and 27.

Solution:

Suppose the two numbers are x and y, then,

x + y = 36 ---------1

and

x = 3y -------------2

Solving equation 1 and 2...

3y+y=36 => 4y=36 => y = 9

x + 9 = 36 => x = 27

Please rate and comment if my answer is right.

Say first number is x and second is y, then

x + y = 205 ( rewriting: y = 205 - x)

and

x - y = 75.

Substituting second equation into third:

x - (205-x) = 75

x - 205 + x = 75

2x - 205 = 75

2x = 75 + 205

2x = 280

x =**140**

y= 205 - x (above) = 205 - 140 =**65**

x + y = 205 ( rewriting: y = 205 - x)

and

x - y = 75.

Substituting second equation into third:

x - (205-x) = 75

x - 205 + x = 75

2x - 205 = 75

2x = 75 + 205

2x = 280

x =

y= 205 - x (above) = 205 - 140 =

Let the two numbers be X and Y:

X + 3Y = 5

2X + Y = 8

Rewrite the second equation to Y = 8 - 2X and substitute in first equation:

X + 3(8-2X) = 5

X + 24 - 6X = 5

-5X + 24 = 5

-5X = 5 - 24

-5X = -19

X = 19/5 =**3.8**

Y = 8 - 2(3.8) = 8 - 7.6 =**0.4**

Check: 3.8 + 3(0.4) = 3.8 + 1.2 = 5

2(3.8) + .4 = 7.6 + 0.4 = 8

X + 3Y = 5

2X + Y = 8

Rewrite the second equation to Y = 8 - 2X and substitute in first equation:

X + 3(8-2X) = 5

X + 24 - 6X = 5

-5X + 24 = 5

-5X = 5 - 24

-5X = -19

X = 19/5 =

Y = 8 - 2(3.8) = 8 - 7.6 =

2(3.8) + .4 = 7.6 + 0.4 = 8

x+y = 123, x-y = 45. So 2x = 123+45 = 168 thus x = 84, y = 39.
