You should price a new wiring harness, around $80 so there is not much reason to spend a lot of time trying to find shorts or open wiring.

Wiring diagram for a john deere sst18 lawn tractor

Russell if you truly want to figure out this problem you need to look at the wires and ware they connect .And what they connect to then drew your own wiring diagram its not that difficult if you break down and do a few tests with an OHM meter to see what is connected and what happens when you through a switch or run a jumper wire to a ground .
If you think about its not really that complex .

I have JD 214 that I've replace coil, points spark plug, wire yet still getting no spark the mower just quit run inspection I found that the points was burnt and plastic where power attached was melted

Wow, a tractor with points. That's rare these days. I believe your tractor was made between 1975 and 1987. It's a 200 series. Does it have the 14 hp Kohler?

Not sure about your problem. On a modern day tractor with electronic ignition, I would check the safety switch system. In your case, I would check the fuse, key switch, and look at the kill wire running off the coils to see if there is worn insulation. If you have seat safety or PTO switches check them too.

I have a 214 kohler engine john deere lawn tractor, what point wires go to hot and the ground

if that is the Kohler 14 hp motor it may have the spark control untit on the motor cover. I recently ran into one like that and switched the coil out from a blown 20 hp kohler engine. I just taped up the excess wires and made sure they were not near any moving parts. The mower ran fine after that. Kohler wants about $160.00 for a spark control unit. There have been no repercussions since making the switch.

1976 JD 214 lawn mower Kohler engine K321AQS Model. Runs rough after 30 - 40 minutes use and starts to shake and over heats. rebuilt engine, honed cyclinder second time. New coil. New spark plug wire....

When it shuts down crack the fuel cap and listen for the woosh of a vacuum on the fuel tank. If you hear this, clean the pinhole vent in the fuel cap, or replace it. Being partially plugged would cause you to be starved for fuel and could explain your issue, and why it goes away after a period of time.
