What is the life expectancy of a pool and spa heater?

I ask this simply because for an items that could cost 2.0K to 3.0K installed that gets turned on a dozen times a year, I want to know how long I should expect it to last.

The most important factor in htr longevity is maintaining proper ph level.high ph is bad ,low ph is worse.when low water becomes corrosive and will eat a hole in your heat exchanger. heat exch is single most expensive part on your heater.

As long as capacities are matched fairly even you should be able to get a long life from your heater. you don't want to get one undersized for the job because it will be working hard to keep up. on the other hand you don't want one so big it is barely working. Keep things matched and you shouldn't have any problems.

Our brand new lp pentair heater for our pool/spa won't work.. it gives us "service heater" indicator light. help. i would love to get into a heated spa..

Its always best to first check all your initial connections. Make sure all the electrical is correctly installed, the heater has a proper connection for the gas and that you have good flow through your LP regulator.
There are a number of troubleshooting items that you can do to work on understanding why the "service heater" light is coming on. Pentair's owner manual is actually very descriptive when troubleshooting this particular issue, including a simple to follow and easy to read flow chart.
http://www.pentairpool.com/pdfs/MasterTempOM.pdf
If this is a brand new unit, you would still be under factory warranty and available to have a manufacturers warranty station service the heater.
Warranty Certificate
Once you have completed the diagnosis as outlined in the owners manual, if you are still having issues with the heater, I suggest you contact Pentair for a local warranty station @ 800-831-7133. When calling, make sure you have the Make, Model, and Serial number of the unit. They will also ask the date of install and the company performing the install (if not by yourself).
I understand that this appears vague, but when you see the standard troubleshooting guide for the SERVICE HEATER error indicator, you will understand why simply posting a detailed response would be a little daunting!
Good luck and please let us know what you find out.

I have a Jandy AquaLink R54. Lights going haywire!

You probably have a spa remote that is hard wired into the side of your spa. This remote has likely shorted out. You will either have to replace it or disconnect it to stop the "ghosting" of items that you are experiencing. Likely, all the items that are turning on are items that are assigned to that remote. Expected life time of Sta-Rite heater?

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

Overall heater life is often dictated more by the pool maintenance history and chemical usage than location. Generally speaking up here in the Midwest you can expect 12 - 15 years of service life from a heater. More if it gets pampered with such treatment as proper winter covering and regular cleaning and maintenance. Far less if chemical issues arise in a pool and are not dealt with properly. A heater can fail in a matter of weeks if water conditions are that poor.

So, to answer your question; with proper installation, maintenance and water treatment I’d put it at 15 – 18 years before the heater will have spent itself from wear.

If this answer does not fix your problem or you are not sure about part or all of this post, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Can we install an indoor thermostat for this heater?

There are aftermarket controls made to allow for remote operation of your heater along with the rest of your pool equipment. Jandy's aqualink system and Haywards Goldline to name two. You may want a professional opinon from a local pool store because these systems can be costly.

You could try to set up your own with a thermostat and thermistor but you would need to be well versed in installing these items as well as running remote wiring which is beyond most technicians or homeowners' abilities.
