Temperature when using frigidare oven, keeps getting hotter and does not cool down

Set oven at 350, noticed that it was getting hotter, and meat was over-cooking, lower temp to 300, still oven was too hot, lower to 170 and still same problem. Heating element was red hot the entire time and never did cool down

Good Afternoon Andrea,

I see that you're having issues with your Frigidaire oven, and the heating element being red hot the entire time you were cooking no matter how much you turned the temperature down.

I suggest giving your appliance a hard reset. You will do this by either unplugging it or cutting the power off at the circuit breaker for at least 2-3 minutes. When power is restored to your oven, you will need to set the clock by entering in the time and pressing start. Preheat the oven, to whatever desired temperature, and if it is still running hotter than it should be, I suggest you contact your local authorized technician. I hope this is helpful.

Diagnosis= failed thermister (temp probe inside the oven cavity) The part number is WB23X5340 and it lists for ~$72.00 at your local appliance parts place.

Bad news is that you have to pull the oven out of the wall to do this repair.

Good news is that it's not difficult to do.

TURN THE POWER OFF AT THE BREAKER BEFORE YOU PROCEED! Otherwise you'd look like this...

Ready? OK!

All you need is;
1.) Phillips screwdriver
2.) 1/4" socket/nutdriver
3.) Ratchet if you don't have a nut driver
4.) 36 quart Igloo ice cooler (like what you'd take to the lake or the beach)
5.) Sturdy wire (smaller than a coat hanger, preferably)
6.) Flashlight

Did I mention TURN THE POWER OFF AT THE BREAKER BOX?

Now we're ready for surgery.

Open the oven door and look where the oven meets the wood. You'll see a couple of screws there... remove them. Now the oven is ready to pull.
Place your Igloo cooler under the oven. Slowly pull the oven from the cavity until you have it out and sitting on the cooler. (don't sweat it... the oven is light. maybe 75 pounds or so.)

Now that you have it out, open the oven door and remove the oven racks. Look inside (may need a flashlight) and locate the temp probe, there are 2 screws holding it in place. Remove those 2 screws and set them inside the oven cavity, you'll need them soon.

Now go to the back of the oven (slide it if necessary) and remove the back panel. (*Here's a tip... some of these GE units? All you have to do is remove one screw to access the temp probe, so look carefully... don't go nuts here. Sometimes the whole panel/panels DON'T have to come off)

You'll see the temp probe wires... they are 2 small white thermally insulated wires coming from the cavity to the wire harness in the back. Disconnect this harness and pull the old probe out from the front of the oven cavity.

OK... now to get the new probe installed... See that plastic thing on the end of the new probe? It's a pain to get through the cavity where you'll be plugging it into. It's best to have help. but it can be done alone (I've never had help, it's just harder)

Take the sturdy wire (from the tools list) and make a small hook at the end of it. Poke it through the hole that the old probe was stuck through. Now hook your new probe into the hook. Now go to the rear of the oven and gently (did I say gently?) pull it through to the back of the oven.

Now that you have it through, connect it to the harness. Now all you have to do is reinstall the rear panel/s and the oven. No biggy. Just take care not to scratch your wood trim... line it up before lifting and installing.

All in all about an hour's worth of work. I know it sounds like alot more but I could have done this in less time than it took me to type it.

it could either be a hot spot in the element where it can no longer pass all the current needed for proper operation in heating(look for a discolored spot on it,it may be whitish and dimpled from heat) or secondly,it could be the oven thermocouple located on the inside top of the oven cavity

find an appliance parts outlet and give them the model number and tell them you need a new oven thermocouple,you maybe able to just replace the thermocouple,or you may need to replace both due to being connected together

Thanks for using FixYa. From what you have described it seems that the oven temperature sensor circuit failed. To resolve this issue you'll have to check the oven temp. sensor circuit if the reading is more then 1100ohms then it should be replaced however, if the rating is fine then it is the Electronic Range Control (ERC) that has gone bad & should be replaced. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

It is asking for the temperature that you want the meat to be. Example if you want your meat to have a medium doneness then usually it is 150F. You would enter 150. The probe will beep when the meat has reached that temperature

When set to bake eg: 350 degrees the audio alarm will indicate it's reached temp but the oven is 50- 75 degrees lower. Must wait another 15 min for it to reach the proper temp. Have tried to adjust the off...


If you are monitoring the oven temperature with an analog style thermometer you may actually be ok, but seeing the thermometers slow reaction time.
Some newer ovens actually do pre-heat beep prior to reaching temp in an effort to conserve eelectricity.
A good home test is to try your oven at several different temps to see if there is any variation in internal temperature. Try it one day on 300, the next at 375 and another day at 450. Give your analog style thermometer time to catch up (usually just about 15 min) and leave it on for a half an hour to see if the temp maintains.
Also Beware of aluminum foil AND THE NEW OVEN LINER MATS as they can alter oven performance bay absorbing and blocking the ovens natural heat radiation and convection air flow currents that happen in all ovens, not just convection models.
Another interesting fact is that older ovens used a thermostat in them that operated much like your thermometer and was very slow to react making the oven typically about 100 degrees hotter than where the customer set it. This was just a fact of life before the advent of electronic temperature management and became noticeable when people began trying to bake older "hand me down" recipes in the newer ovens with less than stellar results.
You can mimic the older oven performance by preheating the oven about a hundred degrees higher than called for and after it reaches temp, re-set it to the correct temperature and put the items in right away.
If you find your temperatures fluctuating ask your servicer to replace first the temp sensor and as a last resort the control board as this part is usually pretty expensive.

Oven temperature does not regulate. The temperature is set for 350 but was 500 degrees in oven according to thermometer. Then sometimes you set it for 350 and it will get to almost 350 and then start...


From the symptons you describe, I would say that the oven thermostat is faulty, and in need of replacement.
Make sure your thermometer is o/k by checking it against another one, or boil some water, and check the temp of the boiling water, this should determine if your thermometer is o/k.

Help our frigidare double oven is locked and we cannot get the chicken out....it keeps beeping and showing an f1 symbol


Press Clear/Off to stop the beeping... then press clear/off again. If it doesn't unlock - wait about 15 minutes for it to cool down.

The F1 error means the EOC (Electronic Oven Control) board has a failure - and thought there was a run-away temperature condition.

It should allow itself to unlock after a few minutes of cool-down.

For additional help in finding a replacement part - a Model # will be required.

Doesn't get as hot as it should


the range has two thermostats one for each oven located under the oven knobs. put a meat thermometer in the oven and adjust the thermostat screw with a small flat screwdriver untill the oven turns off at the correct knob temp.
registered on the thermometer.
then adjust the knob screw on the back of the knob to match that temp setting.
clockwise is hotter counterclockwise is cooler

Maytag gas oven cycles every 20 seconds


yes it is normal . but i know your not the first to think its not , todays ovens are so tight , it only takes 10 seconds of heat to keep them at proper temp . it used to be that ovens where kept at a 3 degree sweep that is set at 350 turn on and up to 353 then off ,cool down to 350 and back on . this was a longer time off and a longer time on topday we keep to 1 degree ! 350 on to 351 off to 350 on and so on ....... so short berst of heat make for a more even oven ........ but i know i hate it too ! good luck

Adjusting Oven Temperature
Oven temperature has been factory calibrated and tested. If
oven consistently over or under cooks food, adjust thermostat.
Oven temperature can be increased or decreased 35°F. To
avoid over adjusting oven, move temperature 5°F each time.
1. Push BAKE pad.
2. Press + pad until an oven temperature greater than 500°F
shows in display.
3. Immediately push and hold, approximately 5 seconds,
BAKE button until “00” appears.
4. Press + or - arrow pad to adjust oven temperature.
• To increase oven temperature (for a hotter oven), Press
pad until a positive number appears in display.
• To decrease oven temperature (for a cooler oven),
Press pad until a negative number appears in display.
5. Press OVEN CANCEL pad to save adjustment.
• Setting is saved if power fails or is disconnected.

HI SIR  
When you first use your Oven, the Oven will need to "settle". That is, it needs to burn off production residues and dust. The metal used in the Oven will also expand slightly when first used. You will experience some crackling and a strong smell. This is perfectly normal and we advice you anticipate this "settling" prior to use. Using an empty Oven, select Function 4 and set a temperature of 250°, allow the Oven to "settle" for hour, turn to function 3 and heat for a further 1/2 hour.
Multifunction Oven Function Selections

2. Defrost - This function activates the fan only, (no heat is used) to allow controlled and hygienic defrosting.
3. Conventional cooking - Normal or traditional cooking functions using the top and bottom elements. When using this function set the thermostat between 50 - 250°C. When the desired temperature is reached the yellow light will go out and then alternate between lit and unlit as the temperature is controlled.
4. Fan-Forced cooking - This selection is best for multilevel cooking as the heat generated by the central element is circulated around the Oven, creating an even heat environment. You will need to set the thermostat dial between 50-250°C for this function.
5. Center Griller - For best results set the thermostat to MAX. The door may remain closed or completely open.
6. Large Griller - For best results set the thermostat to MAX. The door may remain closed or completely open.
7. Fan Griller - This function combines the grill element with fan assistance and is used in conjunction with the thermostat. The Oven door must remain CLOSED during cooking. The thermostat dial should be set between 50-250°C for this function. 
8. Fan-assisted Baking or Patisserie Setting
 - Combines the concealed bottom element with fan assistance and is used in conjunction with the thermostat. The Oven door must remain CLOSED during cooking.

Advanced Oven Features

Cavity Cooling

The Oven has an advanced cavity cooling system. A cylindrical fan is mounted on the rear outside frame of the Oven. This fan assists the movement of air through the Oven cavity keeping it cool. In addition to reducing the temperature in the Oven cavity, the air is blown out around the Oven door handle which keeps the door handle cool. The cooling fan is activated when the Oven light or any cooking function is selected and will switch off after all Oven functions have been turned off.

Triple Reflective Door Glazing

Some Ovens have two levels of removable door glass. The two inner layers are removable and are made of a reflective glass which, in effect, reflects heat back into the Oven and results in a significant reduction in the outside door surface temperature. To clean the door glass, use a coin or large screwdriver to remove the screws. Wipe both sides of the inner, middle and outer glass. Wipe the sealing gasket. Don't forget to replace the rubber sealing gasket around the centre glass layer before replacing the glass. Ensure the narrow air gap lies between the inner and centre glass layers and the wider gap lies between the centre and outside glass layers. Tighten each screw gradually, one then the other until firm. Do not overtighten.

Wipe Clean Enamel (Extra Optional)
Some models have easyclean blue enamel paint throughout the internal cavity walls. Other models have baking trays and grill pans finished in the soft grey super tough "wipe clean" enamel. This enamel is less porous than conventional, so that food does not adhere as easily. Simply wipe clean with a soapy cloth or creme cleanser when cooking is finished. For baked on residue, use a smooth scraper or if necessary a non-caustic Oven cleaner.

Drop Down Grill Element (Extra Optional)
The removal of a single screw at the front of the upper grill element in some models allows the element to drop down so that cleaning of the roof of the Oven is made easy. On completion of cleaning, simply replace the grill element and secure with the screw, finger-tight.

Normal Baking

Function 3: Normal Oven baking using heat from both the upper element and concealed lower element.

To bake, place the Oven rack in the appropriate position according to the type of food to be cooked. Turn the Function Selector to Position 3 and the thermostat knob to the correct temperature, and allow the Oven to fully preheat for best results.

Ideal for cooking casseroles, soufflés, roast, meats, and other items which require a slow method of cooking.

Fan Forced Baking

Function 4: Fan-forced central element cooking requires slightly different timing techniques than normal cooking. The fan draws the air in and over the central element which is positioned around the fan and then circulates it back around the Oven cavity. The even distributor of heat allows foods to rise and cook simultaneously regardless of shelf level. Lower cooking temperatures and in some cases less cooking time is another advantage of this feature.

Turn the Function Selector to Position 4 and turn the thermostat to the desired temperature. Pre heating takes much less time than a normal bake Oven.

Note: When cooking meats, for best results always preheat the Oven to ensure the meat surface is sealed to lock-in juices for a moist and tender result.

Fan forced cooking is ideal for multilevel cooking e.g.. patty cakes. Another advantage of fan forced cooking is that different types of food may be cooked simultaneously without mixing the aromas or flavours. When using the Oven in this way, ensure that all the foods require the same cooking temperature and check the finish times of each dish for best results.

Please note that fan-forced cooking is faster than conventional methods, so take care not to burn your food when you first start using this method.

Grilling

Function 5 & 6: During grilling the door may remain closed or completely open.

This function offers the traditional grilling method necessary to achieve proper browning without overcooking the interior of the foods.

Position 5 activates the centre section of the upper grill element only, which is ideal for browning smaller portions or thinner cuts of meat.

Position 6 activates the entire upper element for the grilling of large quantities or thick cuts of meat.

Allow the griller to pre-heat for approx. 2 minutes before sliding the tray into position.

Place the grill tray into the roasting pan and arrange food according to the function you have selected, either in the centre of the tray or spread across the full width of the tray. Position the tray at the correct grilling level and turn the thermostat control to MAX for best results.

As the temperature is set to MAX you may need to adjust your grilling shelf height to suit the desired cooking result. If the tray is too close to the element, the food will be exposed to the full effect of the element and may burn and create smoke.

Kenmore electric oven


Sears Kenmore Electric Wall OVen, Mod.#9114012192 purchased in 1993. Set oven for 425 degrees, reaches set temperature, stays on about 10 minutes and temp. display goes out and oven starts cooling down. Will not stay on desired temp.to cook. Can you tell me what my problem is? Thanks. Doug.
