Check for spark at the sparkplug by pulling the plug wire from the plug, now insert a phillips head screwdriver into the plug wire and hold by the handle so that the screwdriver is about 3/8 to 1/2 inch from the cylinder head or bolt. Have someone crank the engine and check to see if it sparks. If you have a good blue spark then that's a good thing. Next replace the spark plug with a new one. Spark plugs corrode when sitting in an engine for a long time and loose their ability to spark under compression, especially when they have been run for a whole summer. If this doesn't get your mower started, buy a can of Sta-bil. This is a brand name varnish and gel remover. Mix a little on the strong side and make sure to shake the unit to mix the fuel and Sta-bil. I usually mix a few ounces of gas and Sta-bil in a small squeeze bottle. Then I remove the fuel line and fill the carb and fuel line with this solution, which I mix about 1/2 ounce of, to the 2 ounces of fuel. Crank it over after replacing fuel line and see if it starts. Make sure the choke is on full, it will help it stay running till the mix does its job. Then close choke slowly. If need be get back to me with the Model number, series and year. Good luck I hope this solves your problem. Please post a solved comment on fixya, so I receive credit for the solve. This will increase my ranking on fixya.com That is how I get paid. Two mowers haven't been used in two months and will not start. One will start with starter fluid but will not run. The other doesn't seem to have spark.

One that starts with starter fluid needs to have carburetor cleaned out. Other one needs to have ignition circuit repair - possible bad coil.

Lawn tractor will not start

Try spraying some starter fluid into the carburetor. If it wont even try to start, I would check the ignition system for spark and if it is good I would do a compression check. It needs to be a least 60 PSI on the compression gauge.

Toro Electric Start Problem

Remove spark plug and observe condition. Fouled with oil, bad motor. With plug removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. Spray WD40 in spark plug hole, pull rope several times see if oil blows out. Spray a lot of starter fluid in spark plug hole, replace plug. Spray starter fluid in air cleaner area of carb, try to start. Replace spark plug, try to start. Ensure oil is full, all mowers have a low oil sensor now. 30w oil. Always use Stabile in gas.

My 14SB John Deere mower will start but then quits before moving the throttle, changed oil, oil filter, spark plug, new oil, added fuel stabalizer to gax tank. Any ideas???

Hello. You have some winter buildup in your engine. Get a can of starter fluid and a helper. have the helper shoot small squirts of starter fluid into the air filter while you run the mower. In just a couple of minutes the starter fluid will clear your problem. Joe

! have a Troy built mower with a Honda engine, it quit running and will not start. I changed the spark plug, it ran for about one hour. Now the mower will not start.

Hello. If the gas has been sitting all winter, remove it with a siphoning bulb and put in brand new gas, not even gas that you have been storing all winter. Also, change your air filter. Finally get a can of starter fluid and a helper. While one person squirts a bit of starter fluid into the air intake [near the air filter] the other person starts it and use more squirts of starter fluid to keep it running. Joe

Mower has sat for about 3 years, so we replaced the battery, and put a new starter also. It will not even turn over. Any suggestions?

Now drain and replace the fluids, clean the air filter, put in a new spark plug, add some stabil fuel additive and good premium grade gas.

Give it a while and continue cranking it periodically and it should start
