I have a craftsman riding mower, model 917.271131. it started and ran fine for about five minutes then just died. it did not backfire or make any other noises. it will not start. it will turn over but not start. it has had all old fuel drained and replaced with fresh fuel. it has a new spark plug in it. i have taken the carburetor bowl off and cleaned it out as well.

it is getting spark at the plug as well as gas to the carb

Hi ,you could try tried turning the mower over then undo the spark plug again and see if its wet with petrol . you may have got a piece of debris in the small jet hole that that transfers the petrol from the carb.

Hi , did you turn over the engine and check to see if the spark plug is wet with petrol. You also have an ignition module on this mower and relay switches also safety switches they would all have to be checked.

brand new plug...still will not start

  • ptpumpman Apr 28, 2014

Hi, you will have to check the fuel filter is it a one way filter check arrows. You should have had a wet spark plug it looks like you are not getting any fuel to the sparkplug , best to check all the the fuel side of items that you renewed also you said you cleaned the tank if you check the carb fuel bowl should be full of petrol then there is a problem fuel not being passed from carb through jets also check float chamber mechanism is working . If you don't have fuel in the bowl then you will have to check the tank and lines also the fuel filter and make sure fuel is passing through.

let me correct myself...the plug was not "wet" with fuel but it smelled like fuel

The engine sputter and dies after running for about 2 minutes.

I had this puzzler too! Turned out the problem is caused by the fuel-bowl needle valve. It may look OK but looks are deceiving. It gets a coating on the tip that causes a poor seal ... poor enough to allow fuel to flood the engine after a short run time. The flooded engine dies, but restarts OK after a delay that clears (cooks off) the excess fuel that flooded/killed the engine. SOLUTION: Remove the needle valve and carefully wipe and clean the tip with a white cloth soaked in solvent (gas is OK). The cloth will show the deposits that cause the problem. Carefully re-install the needle valve and float parts, start the engine, confirm that it runs OK and continuously. Simple fix .... puzzling problem.

Starts OK but after about 15 or 20 minutes starts losing power and after moving throttle up and down for five minutes or so to keep going dies After cooling for twenty or thirty minutes will start and go...

When your ignition coil get to engine temp. it will begin to lose its power, therefore your engine will eventually shut down, when it cools it will start up again,
Good luck
