Crock pot use

Our question is when using a crock pot, are you suppose to keep opening
the top to stir or leave the product alone?
We are doing a beef stew and my wife takes the top off every 20 minutes or so to stir, I tell her that this is letting the heat and flavor out.
What is the correct way of using a crock pot?

Re: crock pot use

You should keep the lid on as much as possible. You are correct; once you open the lid, the liquid inside can quickly lose temperature at a rate of 10-15 degrees per minute.

Additionally, taking the top off allows steam to escape, which reduces the point of cooking in a slow cooker (cooking in a relatively closed system, with the steam condensing back to water and flowing back into the broth).

It's not doing a whole lot to the flavor (aside from causing the stew to thicken with the loss of water), but it is definitely causing the cooking to take longer than it should.

Crock Pots will save you hundreds of dollars per year!

I use my crock pot at least 3 times per week and you just do not understand what you are missing! cheap meat, tough meats, or meat that you just do not know what to do with...the crock pot! Take a cheap whole chicken and cut it up, rump roast or any cheap cut of beef, add 2 large cans of tomatos, large onion thickly sliced, 1tsp of thyme, 1 tsp salt, pepper to taste, 1 cup chopped celery. Put it on high as soon as you wake up, go to work. Let cook on high alone no stirring for at leat 10 hours. Get rid of any fat pieces and serve with any side dishes. The next day, chop the meat that is left, put back in the crockpot with leftover sauce and cook for 4 hours. It will be thicker. Serve over rice! Two great meals, no work and so CHEAP!

Where can I get a Rival Crock Pot model SCVE603 replacement lid? Type SC21 Model SCVE603 White Crock Pot with embossed leaves around the top of the crock.

I would start here. I can't find anything that specific to your model out there even on the manufacturers website. Is it an older model..?

Even if they don't carry the one for your specific model you might be able to get a lid for another that will work since you have the dimensions.

I've lost my recipe book which had the best corned beef and cabbage soup recipe. Does anyone have this recipe?

is this the one?

Tangy Corned Beef and Cabbage Stew
You don't have to be Irish to enjoy this lovely dinner.
  • 3 pounds corned beef, rinsed and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 3 tablespoon quick cooking tapioca
  • 3 medium carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 medium onions, quartered
  • 1 small head cabbage, cut into 8 wedges (do not remove the heart)
  • 1- 10 1/2 ounce can beef broth
  • 1 soup can water
  • 2 tablespoons wine vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon horseradish (optional)
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  1. Place corned beef in pot. Sprinkle tapioca evenly over meat.
  2. Spread carrots, onions, and cabbage evenly around and over meat. In a mixing bowl, combine beef broth, water vinegar, dry mustard, horseradish, molasses, cloves and bay leaf. Add to pot.
  3. Cover and simmer at Setting #4 for 6 to 8 hours or until vegetables are fork tender. Remove cloves and bay leaf. Keep warm for serving at Setting #2.
    Makes 6 to 8 servings.

On the dial there is off, low, high and auto. What does the auto do? If I select auto is there a timer on it that shuts the pot down after a time? Is fo what is the time.

There is no timer -- with the dial set to auto, a thermostat opens and closes turning the heating element(s) on and off to keep the pot at a fairly constant temperature. The high setting can continually boil the contents, and can burn the food if not stirred. The low setting is for keeping contents warm.

I'd use "auto", if the pot is not going to be monitored.
