Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Modem won't connect to internet. OS: WinXP Pro SP 3. ISP: Earthlink DSL. Modem: ZyXEL P-660R-D1 (supplied by Earthlink) connected to computer with ethernet cable. Modem includes double filter for phone line and DSL line on main phone; single filter for extension phone upstairs. Everything was working fine until power outage (lights blinked twice) Wednesday night. I disconnected DSL phone line from double filter, but left DSL modem plugged into surge protector. Thursday, reconnected DSL phone line and can't get back online. Contacted Earthlink support twice with great frustration. To date, I have reset the modem and re-booted computer; plugged modem directly into both phone jacks (with no filters, downstairs and upstairs); unplugged and re-plugged all cables and power plug. Still cannot connect to internet. Modem lights show steady green for power; steady yellow for ethernet; blinking green for DSL; no light showing for internet. Earthlink is sending a tech out on Monday to check the outside line. Question: Could the power outage have caused the modem driver and/or Earthlink software to become corrupted? I asked Earthlink support about doing an uninstall and clean reinstall; they said no. But I have my doubts about that. What do you think? I'd like to get this resolved ASAP as I work from home and have had to go back to dialup.

Maybe you have to wait for your provider for them to isolate the problem, it seems that your modem got hit maybe by high surge. ask them to bring a spare modem for isolation.. there is no way for you to isolate the problem coz you've already done the basic....

I no longer have a linksy's device connected to my computer and want the ZyXel P-660R-D1 device to work on my AOL.Com connection so how can I do this for DSL or Broadband connection

First of all good purchase, i use similar router P-660HW-D1 as it supports SNMP for monitoring and log server features.

Have you tried the wizard ? did it give any errors ?

The official settings are :

Connection protocol: PPPoE
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
Username: yourusername@aol.com
Password: youraolpassword
Authentication: CHAP

I had issues with AOL a year back for a friend and we were never able to get a ZyXel working over the connection, hopefully this has changed and they are now using standard ADSL authentication.

On the home page of your router there is a "packet status" link click that and it will give you info about the link status. Also look in the log for any PPP activity and reply to this thread with the info it contains if it does not work.

Hope it helps, Lee :)

I have a ZyXEL P-660R-D1 router connected to my Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz Broadband router and I'm having a few problems. First, the internet light on my ZyXEL won't light up EVER. I am not sure if that...

First of, unplug your Linksys and go right into your ZyXEL, (you might need to run a cable) Run that way for a while, If your not cut off then it's your router. Do this first and we can go from there.

I cant use the 5 IP on a zyxel P-660-D1

Are the 5 IP addreses you mentioned public IPs assigned to you by your ISP? Also what is the end result you are after, the assigning of the public IPs to devices behind the router?

Do you have a zyxel series p600, 660R-D1 dsl modem user manual? I have one and have a range of kbps of 3050 to 240 kblps. I thought I would read and see what to expect, Earthlink and the phone company...

The user manual or user guide of the 660R-D1 is available on the zyxel.com site, if you go into the following path:
Support and downloads --> download library ---> up at the right hand side top you see a drop down menu with list of products, choose 660R Compact series. This brings you to the download page and you can choose out
Model :
P-660R-D1
Version : 3.40
Language : English
OS : N/A
Release Date : 07-14-2006
Size : 7 MB

Citating the part from the manual that I think is important (see down at the bottom of this post the speeds, and the note that it may be influenced by your ISP standard. Ask your ISP what they use.):

1.1

The ZyXEL Device is an ADSL2+ gateway that allows super-fast internet access over analog (POTS) or digital (ISDN) telephone lines (depending on your model).
In the ZyXEL Device product name, "R" denotes an integrated router and "D" denotes a chip set standard.
Your ZyXEL Device product name ends with a number. Models ending in "1", for example P660R-D1, a denote a device that works over the analog telephone system, POTS (plain old telephone service). Models ending in "3" denote a device that works over ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network). Models ending in "7" denote a device that works over T-ISDN (UR-2)

1.2

The DSL RJ-11 (ADSL over POTS models) or RJ-45 (ADSL over ISDN models) connects to your ADSL-enabled telephone line. The ZyXEL Device is compatible with the ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+ standards. Maximum data rates attainable for each standard are shown in the next table:

ADSL:
Up: 832 kbps Down: 8Mbps
ADSL2:
Up: 3,5Mpbs Down: 12Mpbs
ADSL2+:
Up: 3,5Mbps Down: 24Mbps

Note: if your ZyXEL Device does not support Annex M, the max ADSL2/2+ upstream data rate is 1,2Mbps.
ZyXEL Devices which work over ISDN do not support Annex M. The standard your ISP supports determines the maximum upstream and downstream speeds attainable. Actual speeds attained also depend on the distance from your ISP, line quality etc.
