Can you enter the bios settings (usually by pressing DEL or Esc .. or F12 .. depending on your PC..)?

Make sure that the computer is set up to boot from external usb. You need to go into the bios settings to do this.

By default your computer is probably set up to boot from either a dvd - or the hdd.

The reason your computer isn't booting from an iso on an external hdd is because the boot order/priority in your bios settings needs changing.
Have a look on the following link -images of boot order/screenshots

how to boot from external usb Google Search

An ISO image needs to be burned to disk; you cannot boot from the image itself. A free program that can burn the image to a working file is called CDBurnerXP. It will burn CDs and DVDs.

Dell xps will not boot ubcd

The cd-rom in the M1730 might not like the type/brand of disc you are using. An alternative would be to remove the HDD from the laptop and either put it in an external enclosure or get an adapter kit and hook it into another computer all together to recover your data. You can also try to make a bootable USB drive in order to boot the computer.

Hi hermand25
I was about to suggest you to format the hdd when i fell on your last sentence . I think you don't have any other choice , but you can't format it from your pc . Place it in an external box or inside another healthy computer as secundary. When done , you will be able to install Windows on the hdd placed back in your computer . I suppose your machine supports 64-systems ?
Best regards ,
fanaudi .

Os can't boot from hdd

you must use livecd to boot your hdd, then back up all your files to an external hdd, then you are going to reformat your drive to boot it normally.use a working pc to get files..in iso format...save it then burn with your iso burner..you can get the files here>http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
After you've burning, turn on your not booting machine ,place it to cd drive of your machine and it boots, insert your usb or an external hdd then copy all files needed

move the sata connection for your bootable HDD to another port like 3 or 4 and the bios will detect then run bios setup to boot from the sata 3 or 4 and it works like normal, must be a bug in sata 1 and 2. had same issue trying to install win7 x64. Win 7 refuses to detect sata DVD drive, moved it on the MB and it installed fine.

It happens when no boot device is selected, the default is network boot first, you must select CDROM/DVDROM or HD as your first startup device.
